HEATER HOSE

Auto uses are said to account for about one-third of the 30000 tonnes of silicone rubber consumed annually around the world (in turn about 10% of total silicone consumption). Specific uses include shaft sealing rings, spark plug caps, O-rings (the major market for the fluorosilicones), gaskets, coolant and heater hoses for buses and trucks, and ignition cables. [Pg.839]

Even though tire use is small, automotive applications are still the largest market for ethylene-propylene elastomers. They are used predominantly in radiator and heater hoses, seals, gaskets, grommets, and weather stripping. Blends of polypropylene and EPDM are used as material in the manufacture of car bumpers, fender extensions, and rub strips. Other applications of ethylene-propylene elastomers include appliance parts, wire and cable insulation, and modification of polyolefins for improved impact and stress resistance. [Pg.457]

The use of EPDM rubbers for the manufacture of automobile and truck tires has not been successful, mainly because of poor tire cord adhesion and poor compatibility with most other rubbers. However, EPDM rubbers have become widely accepted as a moderately heat-resisting material with good weathering, oxygen, and ozone resistance. They find extensive use in nontire automobile applications, including body and chassis parts, car bumpers, radiator and heater hoses, weatherstrips, seals, and mats. Other applications include wire and cable insulation, appliance parts, hoses, gaskets and seals, and coated fabrics. [Pg.414]

There are a few elastomer reinforcement applications where w-aramid yarns are superior to p-aramid yarns. Continuous filament w-aramid yarn is used in a loose knit construction to reinforce automotive heater hose. Yarn on yarn abrasion resistance, and not strength, is key to performance in this application where the hose is exposed to significant thermal, impulse, and vibrational stresses. A second growing use is in the reinforcement of silicone elastomer hose for automobile turbochargers where j-aramid provides high thermal stability. [Pg.1015]

Silicone elastomers are used in the antomotive indnstry in snch applications as ignition cables, coolant and heater hoses, O-rings, and seals. In aircraft applications, they are used in seals, connectors, cnshions, and hoses, fir home applications, they are used in O-rings, seals, and gaskets. There are also uses in naval and other applications. [Pg.278]

Other nontire automotive applications for HR may include radiator hoses, heater hoses, weather strips and body mounts. [Pg.874]
