Auto uses are said to account for about one-third of the 30000 tonnes of silicone rubber consumed annually around the world (in turn about 10% of total silicone consumption). Chemical Analysis. The presence of silicones in a sample can be ascertained qualitatively by burning a small amount of the sample on the tip of a spatula. Silicones bum with a characteristic spaddy flame and emit a white sooty smoke on combustion. A white ashen residue is often deposited as well. If this residue dissolves and becomes volatile when heated with hydrofluoric acid, it is most likely a siliceous residue (437). Quantitative measurement of total silicon in a sample is often accomplished indirectly, by converting the species to silica or silicate, followed by determination of the heteropoly blue siUcomolybdate, which absorbs at 800 nm, using atomic spectroscopy or uv spectroscopy (438—443). Pyrolysis gc followed by mass spectroscopic detection of the pyrolysate is a particularly sensitive tool for identifying silicones (442,443). This techmque relies on the pyrolytic conversion of silicones to cyclics, predominantly to [541-05-9] which is readily detected and quantified (eq. 37). [Pg.59]

The higher the silicone content and the lower the degree of saponification (z = high), the poorer the solubility in water. The saponification reaction with alkaline catalysts can break the silicone chain. Nevertheless, more than 50 wt% of silicone remains covalently bound to the polyvinyl alcohol part after saponification. With a special saponification process found at Wacker Specialties it is even possible to leave more than 60 wt% and up to 99 wt% of the total silicone content covalently bound to the polyvinyl alcohol part after saponification. Bowman and Wills (285) have recommended specific procedures for silicon. Dissolution of solid samples and preparation of suitable solutions have been described by Terashima (286). Dissolution of mineral samples in H3PO is a convenient method, according to Hofton and Baines (287), especially since it eliminates the background correction when the silicon is dissolved after alkali fusion. Spectral interference of vanadium can be a problem (288). The method is ideal for determining total silicon. [Pg.94]
