Therapeutic modalities in cancer treatment may involve surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. The objectives of cancer chemotherapy include (1) cure, (2) reduction in tumor size, and (3) prolongation of life. At the present time, approximately 50 percent of patients with cancer can be cured, with drug treatment estimated to contribute in 17 percent of cases. Cancer chemotherapy can be curative in testicular cancer, diffuse large cell lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease, choriocarcinoma, certain childhood tumors (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Burkitt s lymphoma, Wilms tumor, and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma). Certain cancers are more resistant to chemotherapy than others (e.g., lung and colon). [Pg.177]

Autologous transplantation is commonly used in non-Hodgkin s lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease, multiple myeloma, and a relatively small subset of patients with solid tumors. A number of laboratory techniques are evolving to allow the bone marrow harvested for autologous transplantation to expand in the laboratory prior to infusion and to cleanse the marrow of potential malignant ceU contamination. [Pg.1801]

This alkylating agent acts on the haemo-poietic system, and particularly pronounced on the lymphoid series. It has been found to be effective in chronic lymphatic leukaemia, the non-Hodgkin lymphomas, Hodgkin s disease and in macroglobulinaemia. On the whole toxicity is slight, gastrointestinal intolerance is relatively uncommon and bone marrow depression is a late unavoidable complication. [Pg.341]
