Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma classification

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is one of the new disease entities previously unrecognized by other classification systems. This histologic type was found in 6% of cases in the International Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma Classification Project. The chromosomal translocation t(l 1 14) occurs in most cases of MCL. MCL usually occurs in older adults, particularly in men, and most patients have advanced disease at the time of diagnosis (see Table 129-8). Extranodal involvement is found in about 90% of cases. The course of the disease is moderately aggressive the median overall survival is about 3 years, with no evidence of a survival plateau. [Pg.2461]

Delineate the clinical course of follicular indolent and diffuse aggressive non-Hodgkin s lymphoma and the implications for disease classification schemes and treatment goals. [Pg.1371]

Lymphomas are a heterogenous group of malignancies that arise from immune cells residing predominantly in lymphoid tissues. Differences in histology have led to classification as Hodgkin s and non-Hodgkin s lymphoma (HL and NHL, respectively), which are addressed separately in this chapter. [Pg.704]

The current classification system for non-Hodgkin s lymphoma is the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms and World Health Organization (REAL-WHO) classification system, which is based on the principle that a classification is a list of specific disease entities defined by a combination of morphology, immunophe-notype, genetic features, and clinical features. [Pg.2439]
