Polyethylene liner

Bags made of woven fabric do not generally provide sufficient containment for liquid products, so such bags often incorporate a film liner. Polyethylene is used most often, but aluminum foil or PVDC copolymers can be used to provide improved barrier ability. The liner may be a single material, or have a multilayer construction. Alternatively, the bags can be coated with PVC or latex to make them waterproof. Liners can also be used in bags for solid products. Often the liner is designed to be disposable to facilitate reuse of the bag. [Pg.265]

In most cases the sample bottle has a wide mouth, making it easy to fill and remove the sample. A narrow-mouth sample bottle is used when exposing the sample to the container cap or to the outside environment is undesirable. Unless exposure to plastic is a problem, caps for sample bottles are manufactured from polyethylene. A composite dmm is constmcted of a plastic, semirigid inner liner (usually polyethylene) and either a steel or fiber outer container or overpack. The composite dmm may be a useful compromise between a plastic dmm and a conventional steel dmm. It is strong enough to be handled like a steel dmm, yet provides an enclosure for chemicals that cannot be shipped safely in steel or fiber dmms. Capacities of composite dmms are 19—208 L (5—55 gal). In 1971 a metal-backed polyethylene acetabular cup was introduced. This cup provided an eccentric socket which was replaceable, leaving the metal and replacing only the polyethylene. On occasion the polyethylene has been blamed for odors caused by other parts of the container design such as screw cap liners, printing inks on the bottle exterior, adhesives used to laminate polyethylene to paper, and the fiberboard or the lining of material used in the separate exterior overpack in which a polyethylene container is held. Careful selection of all of these related materials is always advisable with liquid food products. [Pg.66]
