Metal strips

Stmctural insulation boards are used primarily for wall sheathing in constmctions where wall diaphragm racking resistance is provided by other means, such as stmctural panel corner bracing or metal strip bracing. Where allowed by building codes, these methods of constmction do provide more economical constmction. [Pg.386]

Miscellaneous Methods. Powdered metals such as aluminum, chromium, nickel, and copper, along with various aHoys, can be appHed to parts by electrostatic deposition. The metal strip containing the attached powdered metal must be further processed by cold rolling and sintering to compact and bond the metal powder. [Pg.136]

Miscellaneous Processes. Metal strip for cladding can be produced by cold pressing metal powder into alow density green strip, foUowed by sintering to compact the powder. AHoy powders can be made into strip, along with specialized strip with one powder bonded to a different powder on the opposite side. [Pg.138]

Shipment and Storage. The weight per gallon is 5.6 kg. MSG is shipped and stored in 55-gaHon (0.208 m ) steel dmms or 5-gaHon (0.02 m ) steel pads with a polyethylene liner. Anhydrous MSC is also corrosive toward titanium, titanium—palladium, and zirconium as measured in metal strip tests at 50°C. It is classified as a corrosive Hquid. [Pg.153]

Miscellaneous uses for sodium cyanide include heat treating, metal stripping, and compounds used for clearing smut. Treatment of wood chips with sodium cyanide and CaCl2 reportedly increases the kraft cooking yield of pulp (qv) (64). [Pg.384]

Bimetallie elements are widely used in instruments sueh as thermostats to sense or eon-trol temperatures. There are several bimetallie element types available, sueh as straight strips, eoils and dises, but all rely on the same working prineiple. In its most basie form, the bimetallie strip eomprises of two dissimilar metal strips bonded together, usually of the same surfaee area, but not neeessarily of the same thiekness thermostat. The eom-posite metal strip is elamped at one end to aet as a eantilever beam, and is horizontal at a partieular temperature. When the temperature is inereased, the strip defleets in the direetion of the metal with the least eoeffieient of linear expansion. Its working prineiple relies on the faet that the metals will expand at different rates as the strip is heated. The purpose of this defleetion is to typieally eause the strip to make eontaet with a switeh or eomplete an eleetrie eireuit at a partieular setpoint temperature above the ambient. [Pg.240]

The torsionally soft or resilient coupling such as the quill shaft and the metal-metal resilient transmit torque can handle misalignment through springs, metal strips, coils, disks and diaphragms, They will tune the system by changing the spring constant K. [Pg.398]

When strips of reactive metals such as zinc are placed in water a potential difference, die electromotive force (emf), is set up die metal becomes negatively charged due to die transfer of zinc ions to die solution and die build-up of electrons on die metal. The metal strips or rods are termed die... [Pg.42]

Consider the two cases of (1) two unbonded metal strips of different coefficients of thermal expansion placed side by side but not bonded and (2) the same two strips bonded together. For case (1), at room temperature, the two strips are the same length. When they are heated, both strips elongate (their primary observable change, but they do also get wider and thicker). For case (2) at room temperature, the strips are also of the same length but bonded together. When the bonded bimetallic... [Pg.6]

Dry bulb sensors may be bi-metal strips, thermistors or refrigerant-filled phials or bellows responding to pressure differences caused by temperature change. These, in turn, provide an electrical or mechanical signal. The mechanical items are used to alter the value of potentiometers or make-or-break contacts. The signals are transmitted to amplifiers, which respond to the degree of error. An important feature is the proportional band of temperature over which the controls call for up to full plant capacity. [Pg.440]

Compatibility with Metals. Strips of metals, kept for 40 days in Pb trinitro-m-oxybenzoate contg 3.40% water, lost the following amts in g/cm3 Cu 5, steel 10, Al 15, Sn415, Pb 565, and Zn 965. The least corroded metals were Cu, steel and Al... [Pg.458]

A well-known high conversion reactor is the so-called polymerization press, a modified plate-and-frame filter press where polystyrene is polymerized in frames alternating between cooling platens through which water (or steam) can be circulated. Other versions of the high conversion reactor have been utilized, e.g., the early "can process of Dow, where styrene monomer was placed in sealed cans in water baths and the metal stripped off at the end of the polymerization 2). [Pg.73]

Some electrodes are made of substances that participate in the redox reactions that transfer electrons. These are active electrodes. Other electrodes serve only to supply or accept electrons but are not part of the redox chemistry these are passive electrodes. In Figure 19-7. both metal strips are active electrodes. During the redox reaction, zinc metal dissolves from the anode while copper metal precipitates at the cathode. The reactions that take place at these active electrodes are conversions between the metals contained in the electrodes and their aqueous cations. [Pg.1373]

Since different metals strip from mercury electrodes at characteristic peak potentials, several metal ions can be determined simultaneously. Metal ions which have been determined by ASV at a mercury electrode are BP, Cd, Cu, Ga, Ge, In, NP, Pb, Sb, Sn, Tl, and Zn. Solid electrodes such as graphite enable Hg, Au, Ag, and PP to be determined by ASV. In this case, the metal is preconcentrated on the surface of the electrode as a metallic film, which is then stripped off by the positive potential scan. [Pg.41]

Area processed means the area actually exposed to process solutions. Usually this includes both sides of the metal strip. [Pg.303]

Stainless steel coil and sheet stock is unloaded and stored outdoors under protective cover. As it is needed, the coil stock is moved indoors by a forklift to one of six automatic tube mills where the sides of unrolled metal strips are curled up to form a continuous, cylindrical pipe. The seam of the resulting pipe is fused in an electric in-line welding operation. An abrasive saw is used to cut the continuously formed pipe to specified lengths sections of poorly welded pipe are cut away. [Pg.1205]

Static mixers. Static mixers are manufactured from thin metal strips with the same width as the tube internal diameter. In contrast with twisted tapes, the helix is not continuous. The flow is caused to twist through 180° and then twist in the reverse direction through 180°, and so on. The continuous splitting, reorientation and recombination of the fluid cause the enhancement as it flows through the insert. [Pg.334]

An emulsion, formed during extraction of a strongly alkaline liquor with trichloroethylene, decomposed with evolution of the spontaneously flammable gas, dichloro-acetylene [1]. This reaction could also occur if alkaline metal-stripping preparations were used in conjunction with trichloroethylene degreasing preparations, some of which also contain amines as inhibitors, which could also cause the same reaction [2], Apparently accidental contact of the solvent with potassium hydroxide solution led to generation of flames in the charging port of a stirred reactor [3], See Tetrachloroethylene Sodium hydroxide... [Pg.252]

Zinc metal is very reactive chemically. Zinc metal strips are often used as the plates in wet cell batteries. Galvanized iron is iron that has been coated with a thin film of zinc metal to protect it from corrosion. Many garbage cans and metal buckets are made of galvanized iron. [Pg.60]

Lithium metal strip (Metalloy Corporation, Rand Tower, Minneapolis, Minnesota) is wiped to remove the protective grease and then placed in petroleum ether (b.p. 32-37°). Pieces are cut with scissors, air-dried to remove solvent, and added to the reaction mixture. [Pg.99]

Focal plane detectors are used primarily to detect ions separated in space by, for example, magnetic sector analyzers (see Section 2.2.2). The objective of an ideal focal plane detector is to simultaneously record the location of every ion in the spectrum. In many ways the photoplate (see Section 2.3.1) is the original focal plane detector, but it has today been more or less replaced with designs that rely on EM detectors (see Section 2.3.3). A common arrangement is to allow the spatially disperse ion beams simultaneously to impinge on an MCP (see Section 2.3.3.2). The secondary electrons generated by the ion impacts then strike a one- or two-dimensional array of metal strips and the current from the individual electrodes is recorded. A tutorial on the fundamentals of focal plane detectors is found in Reference 283. Reference 284 provides a relatively recent review of MS detector-array technology. [Pg.69]

The clamping devices can be made from a 1/8-in. metal strip, chair gliders, and wing nuts. [Pg.460]
