There is an abundance of references defining and describing the role played by QA, Quality Control (QC) and Total Quality Management (TQM) in a modem commercial analytical laboratory. The role played by reference materials (RMs) and certified reference materials (CRMs) in the pursuit of analytical measurement accuracy is also well documented. 

Taylor et al. [20] have paid considerable attention to the changing role of management, particularly with regard to the introduction of robotic systems. Management has the responsibihty to define the best areas for automation in terms of cost-effectiveness and probabihty of success. Without adequate resources, a project will fail. Laboratory managers must act as the interface between senior management and analysts to ensure that the appropriate incentives, resources and education are made available.

The word standard and its use in the context of quality assurance of spectroscopic measurements can be broadly defined in three very different ways, each adding its own suffix to the term Standard . These definitions can be broadly described as calibration, documentation, and reference - and such are the vagaries of the English language that these can often be subdivided further. However, each has it s own vital contribution to the overall quality assurance of the spectroscopic measurements performed, and it is up to the laboratory manager to decide on the type or types required and their roles in ensuring that the data is indeed fit for purpose.

The latest consensus on the definition and management [1] of anaphylaxis agrees on the lack of imiversally accepted diagnostic criteria and reliable laboratory biomarkers to confirm the clinical impression. Sometimes it is not feasible to obtain the samples within the optimum time frame. Moreover, in spite of a correct collection of samples, histamine and/or tryptase are within normal levels. Hence, new markers should be explored and further research into the role of selected mediators is urgently needed. Recently however, studies from animal models have shown promising results. In this chapter we will seek to review our current knowledge on confirmed or putative markers for the in vitro diagnosis of anaphylaxis. 

Analytics plays a critical and sometimes underestimated role in the pace and direction of industrial projects. In this chapter, we have advocated the use of a computer for plotting the standard curve and performing the least squares fit procedure. Indeed, computers play a central role in the analytical laboratory for acquiring and manipulating data generated by instruments and for information management. 

A panel of experts from academia and industry (Table 12.4-2) was assembled to provide the students with professional advice. The HKUST central facilities for Material Characterization and Preparation Facility (MCPF) and Advanced Engineering Material Facility (AEMF) and the laboratories of Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Technology Center play a pivotal role in the success of the project. Table 12.4-3 lists the equipment used by the students in this project. 

Computers were first used in laboratories to calculate results and generate reports, often from an individual instrument. As automated analysers were developed, so the level of computerization increased and computers now play a major role in the modem laboratory. They are associated with both the analytical and organizational aspects and the term Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is often used to describe this overall function. Such systems are available that link the various operations associated with the production of a validated test result, from the receipt of the sample to the electronic transmission of the report to the initiator of the request, who may be at a site removed from the laboratory. Other uses include stock control, human resource management and budgets. 

The most direct way to help people manage the symptoms of nicotine dependence and withdrawal is therapeutic use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) (Fiore et al. 2000 Henningfleld 1995 American Psychiatric Association 1996). Nicotine has been shown to be the main active ingredient in tobacco that causes and sustains addiction to tobacco (US Department of Health and Human Services 1988). Laboratory research has demonstrated that animals (Goldberg et al. 1983) and humans (Henningfleld et al. 1983) who have been chronically exposed to nicotine or tobacco smoke will self-administer nicotine infusions. It should be noted that other constituents in tobacco, such as MAO inhibitors (Fowler et al. 1996a, b), may also play a role in tobacco dependence. The potential role of alkaloids other than nicotine has not been ruled out. This is consistent with the observations that what has been termed tobacco delivered nicotine is more addictive and toxic than formulations provided by nicotine replacement medications (Royal College of Physicians 2000). 

From management s perspective, the QAO needed to be capable of critically evaluating laboratory operations, recognizing the need for changes and improvements, and recommending practical alternatives. In turn, the QAO would need no less than full management support in order to properly execute the QA unit s role as the purveyor of excellence. We, therefore, deemed it prudent and necessary to have the QAO report directly to company management.
