Direct oxidation yields biacetyl (2,3-butanedione), a flavorant, or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, an initiator used in polyester production. Ma.nufa.cture. MEK is predominandy produced by the dehydrogenation of 2-butanol. The reaction mechanism (11—13) and reaction equihbtium (14) have been reported, and the process is in many ways analogous to the production of acetone (qv) from isopropyl alcohol. [Pg.489]

Other uses include use as a reaction and extraction solvent in pharmaceutical production as an intermediate for the preparation of catalysts, antioxidants (qv), and perfumes and as a feedstock in the production of methyl isopropenyl ketone, 2,3-butanedione, and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Concern has also arisen at the large volume of exported MEK which has been covertly diverted and used to process cocaine in Latin American countries... [Pg.490]

Acidic hydrolysis of these hydroxyaLkyl hydroperoxides yields carboxyUc acids, whereas basic hydrolysis regenerates the parent aldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and often other products. When derived from either aldehydes or cycHc ketones, peroxides (1, X = OH, = H, R, = alkylene or... [Pg.113]

Cobalt salts are used as activators for catalysts, fuel cells (qv), and batteries. Thermal decomposition of cobalt oxalate is used in the production of cobalt powder. Cobalt compounds have been used as selective absorbers for oxygen, in electrostatographic toners, as fluoridating agents, and in molecular sieves. Cobalt ethyUiexanoate and cobalt naphthenate are used as accelerators with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide for the room temperature cure of polyester resins. [Pg.382]

About 8,000 metric tons of peroxides were consumed in 1972. This consumption was strongly stimulated by the rapid growth in reinforced plastics (Ref 23). The largest volume product is benzoyl peroxide which is used in polystyrene and polyester markets for such items as toys, automobiles, furniture, marine, transportation and mil requirements. Also, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is used in large volumes to cure (as a catalyst) styrene-unsatur-ated polyester adhesive resins used in mil ammo adhesive applications, as well as in glass fiber reinforced plastic products such as boats, shower stalls, tub components, automobile bodies, sports equipment, etc. The monoperesters are growing slowly because of some substitution of the peroxydicarbonates and azo compds (Refs 8,9 23)... [Pg.676]

Oxidative damage to membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids leads to the formation of numerous lipid peroxidation products, some of which can be measured as index of oxidative stress, including hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, and short carboxylic acids. [Pg.275]

The polyester product is first dissolved in styrene at a level of 60 % polyester and 40 % styrene. The initiators, either benzoyl peroxides (BPOs) or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), with appropriate co-catalysts, are added. The mixture is then poured into a glass mold and cured at room temperature for the MEKP system or at 100 °C for the BPO systems. A post-cure at 100 °C or 130 °C, respectively, for 5 h is then carried out. Blending experiments were carried out by using a dicyclo pentadiene (DCPD) resin, 61-AA-364, from GLS Fiberglass (Woodstock, IL, USA). This sample is pre-promoted , so we could only use the MEKP system. [Pg.717]

Now, IPA is used primarily as a coating and processing solvent in paints, electronics applications, synthetic resins, personal care products, and cosmetics. It is also used as a chemical intermediate for isopropyl esters, isopropyl amines, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, and hydrogen peroxide production.-... [Pg.202]

Reactions with ketones yield ketone peroxides. For example, with methyl ethyl ketone, the product is methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, which prohahly is a mixture of monomeric and polymeric products of peroxidic structure. [Pg.377]

Saturated hydrocarbons are homolytically oxidized by complexes (205) into alcohols, ketones and t-butyl peroxide products. The hydroxylation reaction occurs at the more nucleophilic C—H... [Pg.397]

Explosions of many dangerous organic peroxides, such as methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and dibenzoylperoxide, frequently occurred in the early years of their use. In developed countries, however, products made safe through dilution or other means have come on the market because of progress in research. In new developing countries on the other hand, accidents with organic peroxide in plants or during transportation still occur. [Pg.38]

The heading production of chemical products includes the conversion of allyl alcohol to glycerine with hydrogen peroxide, the production of epoxy-compounds such as epoxy soya oil (plasticizer for PVC) and organic peroxides (e.g. methyl-ethyl-ketone-peroxide, dibenzoylperoxide), which are used as free radical initiators in polymerization processes. The production of amine oxides such as lauryl-dimethyl-amine-oxide with hydrogen peroxide (used as a rinsing agent in dishwashers) is also included. [Pg.27]
