C. Excreted in the urine in the rare hereditary disease alkaptonuria. Homogentisic acid is easily oxidized in the air to dark-coloured polymeric products, so that urine from patients with alkaptonuria turns gradually black. It is formed from tyrosine and is an intermediate in tyrosine breakdown in the body. Alkaptonuria is due to the absence of the liver enzyme which cleaves the aromatic ring. [Pg.205]

Silcones are important products of silicon. They may be prepared by hydrolyzing a silicon organic chloride, such as dimethyl silicon chloride. The polymeric products can be made to vary widely in physical properties through controlled variation in the ratios of monomers employed in thek preparation, cross-linking, and control of molecular weight. They share common quaHties of high resistance to chemical and environmental attack, excellent clarity, and attractive strength properties (see Acrylic ester polymers). In addition to acryHc acid itself, methyl, ethyl, butyl, isobutyl, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates are manufactured on a large scale and are available in better than 98—99% purity (4). The type of initiator utilized for a solution polymerization depends on several factors, including the solubiUty of the initiator, the rate of decomposition of the initiator, and the intended use of the polymeric product. The amount of initiator used may vary from a few hundredths to several percent of the monomer weight. As the amount of initiator is decreased, the molecular weight of the polymer is increased as a result of initiating fewer polymer chains per unit weight of monomer, and thus the initiator concentration is often used to control molecular weight. Metal-Matrix Composites. A metal-matrix composite (MMC) is comprised of a metal ahoy, less than 50% by volume that is reinforced by one or more constituents with a significantly higher elastic modulus. Reinforcement materials include carbides, oxides, graphite, borides, intermetahics or even polymeric products. These materials can be used in the form of whiskers, continuous or discontinuous fibers, or particles. Matrices can be made from metal ahoys of Mg, Al, Ti, Cu, Ni or Fe. In addition, intermetahic compounds such as titanium and nickel aluminides, Ti Al and Ni Al, respectively, are also used as a matrix material (58,59). P/M MMC can be formed by a variety of full-density hot consolidation processes, including hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing, extmsion, or forging. [Pg.191]

THE can be polymerized by many strongly acidic catalysts, but not all of them produce the requked bitimctional polyether glycol with a minimum of by-products. Several large-scale commercial polymerization processes are based on fluorosulfonic acid, HESO, catalysis, which meets all these requkements. The catalyst is added to THE at low temperatures and an exothermic polymerization occurs readily. The polymerization products are poly(tetramethylene ether) chains with sulfate ester groups (8). [Pg.364]

Many other polymerization processes have been patented, but only some of them appear to be developed or under development ia 1996. One large-scale process uses an acid montmorrillonite clay and acetic anhydride (209) another process uses strong perfiuorosulfonic acid reski catalysts (170,210). The polymerization product ia these processes is a poly(tetramethylene ether) with acetate end groups, which have to be removed by alkaline hydrolysis (211) or hydrogenolysis (212). If necessary, the product is then neutralized, eg, with phosphoric acid (213), and the salts removed by filtration. The primary polymerization product ia these processes has a relatively wide molecular weight distribution, and a separate step is often used to narrow the polydispersity. Such a narrowkig step may consist of high vacuum stripping to remove volatile polymer chains, often followed by a solvent fractionation step (35,36), sometimes a solvent fractionation step alone (37,38), or a fractional precipitation from organic solvent (32). The molecular weight distribution can also be narrowed by depolymerization at elevated temperatures ia the presence of a depolymerization catalyst (217—220). [Pg.364]

Primary aromatic amines react with aldehydes to form Schiff bases. Schiff bases formed from the reaction of lower aUphatic aldehydes, such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, with primary aromatic amines are often unstable and polymerize readily. Aniline reacts with formaldehyde in aqueous acid solutions to yield mixtures of a crystalline trimer of the Schiff base, methylenedianilines, and polymers. Reaction of aniline hydrochloride and formaldehyde also yields polymeric products and under certain conditions, the predominant product is 4,4 -methylenedianiline [101 -77-9] (26), an important intermediate for 4,4 -methylenebis(phenyhsocyanate) [101-68-8], or MDI (see Amines, aromatic amines, l thylenedianiline). [Pg.230]

Sorbic acid is oxidized rapidly in the presence of molecular oxygen or peroxide compounds. The decomposition products indicate that the double bond farthest from the carboxyl group is oxidized (11). Advancement Process. In the advancement process, sometimes referred to as the fusion method, Hquid epoxy resin (cmde diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) is chain-extended with bisphenol A in the presence of a catalyst to yield higher polymerized products. A waterborne system for container coatings was developed based on a graft copolymerization of an advanced epoxy resin and an acryHc (52). The acryhc-vinyl monomers are grafted onto preformed epoxy resins in the presence of a free-radical initiator grafting occurs mainly at the methylene group of the aHphatic backbone on the epoxy resin.
