Three networking activities and two joint research activities are formulated and cross-linked in the EUROCHAMP project. 

The major objective of the joint research activities within the EUROCHAMP project is the optimisation and further development of the infrastmctures performance. In order to meet these goals, two corresponding research activities are defined in the EUROCHAMP work programme, namely the development and refinement of analytical equipment and the development of chemical modelling techniques. 

The next major discovery in this field, which was the result of a joint research effort in 1968 between M and T Chemicals, Inc., and the Dow Chemical Company in the United States (475, 524), was that tricyclo-hexyltin hydroxide ("Plictran ) possesses a very high activity against certain types of mites, and this compound was subsequently introduced by Dow as an acaricide for use on apple, pear, and citrus-fruit trees. Market Development. As Defined in Wiley s Successful Commercial Chemical Development, edited by H. M. Corley, market development is that field of promotional effort between basic research and regular sales, by which existing or potential markets for new products and entirely new fields of utility for old products are developed and tested for profitable salability. Jarvis-Patrick clustering has also been used to support QSAR analysis in a system developed at the European Communities Joint Research Center. " ° The EINECS (European Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances) database contains more than 100,000 compounds and has been clustered using 2D structural descriptors. That database also has associated physicochemical properties and activities, but the data is very sparse. Jarvis-Patrick clustering was used to extract clusters containing sufficient compounds with measured data for an attempt to be made to estimate the properties of members of the cluster lacking the data. For a few clusters, it was used to develop reasonable QSAR models. 

For the last 4 years, in a joint research project with C. F. Code, we attempted to come closer to an evaluation of the nature of gastrone. The study included the distribution of activity on the electrophoretic partition of pooled acid and anacid human gastric juices, as well as in effluents from the gel filtration of these materials on Sephadex columns of various porosities. Preliminary findings have been recently published in abstract form (K31).

The production of biological and environmental Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) is one of the main activities of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Geel (Belgium) (1). The Reference Materials Unit was therefore requested by the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS), Rome (Italy) to perform the transformation of a batch of ca. 80 kg wet Antarctic coastal marine sediment, eollected in the Terra Nova Bay during the XI Italian Expedition to the Antarctic, into a sampled, dry and conservable powder to be certified for the content of a range of elements.

Both authors can trace their academic ancestry to the Gamer School in Bristol that made such a seminal contribution in early research concerned with the chemistry of solids, particularly decompositions. They have worked in continuous collaboration for more than 25 years, both in Belfast and in Grahamstown, publishing many articles under joint authorship in a wide range of journals and at international conferences. During this co-operative research effort, of unusual duration and extent, they have not only developed areas of common interest but have both retained complementary research activities in different areas. Together they have been able to cover a wider range of topics than either could have individually. 

The transfer subproject 15 is a joint research initiative of RWTH Aachen University, Computer Science 3 and the German software company innotec. It is the transfer activity of the IMPROVE subproject B2. 

In the late 1960s the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Community decided to revise its research programmes, then entirely devoted to nuclear research, and to venture into other fields of activities of European relevance. One of the options, amongst others, was environmental research — not a big issue in those times.
