In the early 1940s an intensive research programme on the polymerisation of formaldehyde was initiated by the Du Pont Company. As a consequence of this work polymers, both tough and adequately stable to processing conditions, were prepared and eventually marketed " (Delrin). 

The work described in this section was undertaken as part of the Underlying Research Programme of the UKAEA. 

The results of one research programme indicate that copper-chromium-arsenic treatments are not corrosive towards galvanised steel and stainless steel in the moisture content range 15-22%.

The activated sludge process for domestic wastewater treatment was introduced to the world in 1914.1 Since then, many studies have been conducted to improve the oxygen transfer efficiency. Among the aeration devices introduced have been a porous diffuser, a filter type diffuser, a mechanical aeration device, an orifice type diffuser and a fine-pore air diffuser. The aeration market is in a substantial state of flux in the USA today. Emphasis on high efficiency has led many intensive research programmes to aim at the evaluation of the design, operation and control processes to improve overall system performance. 

To a certain extent, the phenomenal expansion of organosulfur chemistry in recent years is also reflected in this review. It is hoped that this chapter, which is intended to serve all chemists, experts and students alike, will help them include its knowledge in their research programmes, and will stimulate further creative work in the area. 

The research programme into n-butyl lithium initiated, anionic polymerization started at Leeds in 1972 and involved the construction of a pilot scale, continuous stirred tank reactor. This was operated isothermally, to obtain data under a typical range of industrial operating conditions.

ICI Acrylics believes that greater cooperation between companies and a revised approach to life cycle analysis are the keys to the industry s future environmental sustainability. The company has invested over 2m pounds sterling in an on-going monomer recovery project, which encompasses a joint research programme with Mitsubishi Rayon. It is reported that between 10 and 11 million cars are taken apart every year in North America once the metallic portion has been recovered from the crushing operation, the remainder - representing over 20% of the total mass or 3.5 million tons - must be eliminated. Pyrovac, in collaboration with Universite Laval and under the sponsorship of E.T.P. Technologies, recently undertook a research programme to recover valuable products from this Automobile Shredder Residue. A process flow sheet for a 4000 kg/hr plant is presented, with fixed capital investment estimated to be 5 million US dollars. Details are given. 

Quantum mechanics was the dominant theory in chemistry even before the advent of electronic computers. The conventional date for the beginning of this period may be fixed at 1927 with the publications of the Heitler and London paper on hydrogen molecule [3]. The growth of theoretical chemistry (or better, theoretical quantum chemistry) between 1930 and 1960 (thirty years, again, as for the last period) has followed a research programme different from that accepted in the most recent period.

The response to this situation in the early 1970 s was to set-up three major research programmes to investigate the fire performance of furniture and furnishings. The UK public area situation contrasted markedly with the UK domestic situation.
