A method for producing a polyethylene sponge that is flame resistant and does not produce any poisonous gases when burned has been developed by the Research Development Corp. of Japan. The article supplies brief details of the product and its applications.

In Japan, there is a project aimed at capturing the considerable volume of hydrogen gas which can be obtained as a by-product steel production. R D will focus on the purification process of fuel from coke oven gas to an acceptable level for fuel cell utilisation. METI, the Japan Research and Development Centre for Metals and Nippon Steel are working on the project with a 2003 budget allocation of 549 million. Japan also operates the 4C/.f project which aimsto develop an optimum coal gasifier for fuel cells and the establishment of gas clean-up system for purification of coal gas to the acceptable level for utilisation for MCFC and SOFC. The budget allocations for 2000-2003 total 4.6 billion. 

The third factor was the attendance of nine well-known carbon scientists from Europe and Japan in the 1984 symposium. In the following sections, I will focus on the developments carried out during last 10 years in Japan. Finally I will add one example developed mainly by National Food Research Institute.

F. w. GORDON FEARON is technical director and vice president for Dow Corning in Japan. He received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Leeds and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wales for research in the silicon field. He carried out postdoctoral research in silicon chemistry at Iowa State University. He joined Dow Corning Corporation in 1968, and since then he has held a wide variety of research, development, and business management positions, with particular emphasis on expanding the scope of useful silicon science and technology.

To overcome the main problem of conventional coal briquettes, excessive pollution, beginning in about the 1960s, research started in Europe, particularly the UK and in Japan to develop smokeless coal briquettes. As a result of fundamental studies into and evaluations of the briquetting of coal at the British National Coal Board s Coal Research Establishment (NCB/CRE) a book on roll pressing was published in 1976 [B.13b].
