The implementation of sanitary sewer systems and treated water supplies has protected the public from many kinds of biohazards. State and local governments have plumbing codes, codes for sanitary sewer systems, and codes for water supply systems. In many locations, plumbing and sanitary lines require inspection when initially installed or modified. Strict code enforcement prevents potential disease transfer. Careful separation of potable water from untreated water supplies and sewer lines prevents cross-contamination or back flow to the potable water. [Pg.381]

Drilled wells—Drilled wells are usually the only type of well allowed for use in most public water supply systems. Several different methods of drilling are available, all of which are capable of drilling wells of extreme depth and diameter. Drilled wells are constructed using a drilling rig that creates a hole into which the casing is placed. Screens are installed at one or more levels when water-bearing formations are encountered. [Pg.97]

Absorption Field A system of properly sized and constructed narrow trenches partially filled with a bed of washed gravel or crushed stone into which perforated or open joint pipe is placed. The discharge from the septic tank is distributed through these pipes into trenches and surrounding soil. While seepage pits normally require less land area to install, they should be used only where absorption fields are not suitable and well-water supplies are not endangered. [Pg.601]

Regarding fires, water is the primary extinguishing agent, and it should be available in adequate supply and pressure at all of the locations in the plant. The flows of wastewater originating from the water supply of a community and runoff from precipitation on urban surfaces are typically collected and conveyed for treatment and disposal. The system used for this purpose is called a sewer network or a collection system that consists of individual pipes (sewer lines) and a number of installations, such as inlet structures and pumps, to facilitate collection and transport. The efficient, safe and cost-effective collection and transport of wastewater and urban runoff have been identified as key criteria to be observed. In this context, the word safe means that public health, welfare and environmental protection have high priority. The demand for solutions toward more sustainable water management in the cities is a new challenge. [Pg.1]

Firewater supply sources can be the city public water main, a dedicated storage tank and pumps, or the most convenient lake, river or if an offshore installation the open sea. Brackish or salt water supplies can be used if suitable corrosion protection measures are applied to the entire firewater system if it is planned to be used for an extended life (i.e., grater than five years). If a short life span of the facility is expected, short corrosion resistant materials may be used (i.e., carbon steel, galvanized steel, etc.), provided periodic testing indicates their integrity is still adequate and scale or corrosion particles do not affect operational efficiency. [Pg.204]

The city of Columbus, Ohio, installed a PACT water treatment system for 1.2 million. The system was purchased to remove atrazine (a pesticide) from the water supply.
