Impetus

The brilliant book which provided the impetus for the ecological movement - and has retained its supreme power to this day. 

A belief that solid interfaces are easier to understand than liquid ones shifted emphasis to the former but the subjects are not really separable, and the advances in the one are giving impetus to the other. There is increasing interest in films of biological and of liquid crystalline materials because of the importance of thin films in microcircuitry (computer chips ), there has been in recent years a surge of activity in the study of deposited mono- and multilayers. These Langmuir-Blodgett films are discussed in Section XV-7. 

Physical background. MAS will narrow the inliomogeneously broadened satellite transitions to give a series of sharp sidebands whose intensity envelopes closely follow the static powder pattern so that the quadnipole interaction can be deduced. The work of Samoson [25] gave real impetus to satellite transition spectroscopy by showing that both the second-order quadnipolar linewidths and isotropic shifts are fiinctions of / and Some combinations of / and produce smaller second-order quadnipolar effects on the satellite lines than... 

The form of the Hamiltonian impedes efficient symplectic discretization. While symplectic discretization of the general constrained Hamiltonian system is possible using, e.g., the methods of Jay [19], these methods will require the solution of a nontrivial nonlinear system of equations at each step which can be quite costly. An alternative approach is described in [10] ( impetus-striction ) which essentially converts the Lagrange multiplier for the constraint to a differential equation before solving the entire system with implicit midpoint this method also appears to be quite costly on a per-step basis. 

Iter Kolin, whose name appears on the two key papers wliich provided the impetus for the lopment of modern density functional theory, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in, jointly witli Jolin Pople. 

From 1960 onwards, fhe increasing availabilify of intense, monochromatic laser sources provided a fremendous impetus to a wide range of spectroscopic investigations. The most immediately obvious application of early, essentially non-tunable, lasers was to all types of Raman spectroscopy in the gas, liquid or solid phase. The experimental techniques. 

Progress in the field received further impetus with the development of synthetic steroids exhibiting activities far greater than that of the natural hormones. The synthesis of 9 a-fluorocortisol (3), described in 1953 by Fried and Sabo (3), opened the way for development of many more highly active antiinflammatory agents, and indeed some of today s most active antiinflammatory agents (ca 1997) bear some resemblance to this 9a-fluorinated steroid. 

After the stmcture and absolute stereochemistry of cleavamine (111), C22H24N2, was estabUshed, its synthesis was shortly completed and impetus to unravel the stmcture of the dimeric bases (22) was bolstered (77). Again, the fragment, now only slightly modified from that originally present in secologanin (102), is readily seen in catharanthine (107). 

The large amount of fluorine values released from phosphate rock in the manufacture of fertilisers (qv) gives a strong impetus to develop fluorine chemicals production from this source (see Phosphoric acid and the phosphates). Additional incentive comes from the need to control the emission of fluorine-containing gases. Most of the fluorine values are scmbbed out as fluorosiUcic acid, H2SiPg, which has limited useflilness. A procedure to convert fluorosihcic acid to calcium fluoride is available (61). 

Another impetus to expansion of this field was the advent of World War 11 and the development of the atomic bomb. The desired isotope of uranium, in the form of UF was prepared by a gaseous diffusion separation process of the mixed isotopes (see Fluorine). UF is extremely reactive and required contact with inert organic materials as process seals and greases. The wartime Manhattan Project successfully developed a family of stable materials for UF service. These early materials later evolved into the current fluorochemical and fluoropolymer materials industry. A detailed description of the fluorine research performed on the Manhattan Project has been pubUshed (2). 

Reciprocating Compressors. Prior to 1895, when Linde developed his air Hquefaction apparatus, none of the chemical processes used industrially required pressures much in excess of I MPa (145 psi) and the need for a continuous supply of air at 20 MPa provided the impetus for the development of reciprocating compressors. The introduction of ammonia, methanol, and urea processes in the early part of the twentieth century, and the need to take advantage of the economy of scale in ammonia plants, led to a threefold increase in the power required for compression from 1920 to 1940. The development of reciprocating compressors was not easy Htfle was known about the effects of cycles of fluctuating pressure on the behavior of the... 

The International Standards Organization 9000 (ISO 9000) standard, developed by the European Economic Community (EEC), also impacts manufacturers implementation of LIMS systems. ISO 9000 is a set of standards which are required for manufacturers selling products to the EEC. The 9000 standards are credited with playing an important part in the impetus to greater computerization of laboratory information management (9). 

For the visible and near-ultraviolet portions of the spectmm, tunable dye lasers have commonly been used as the light source, although they are being replaced in many appHcation by tunable soHd-state lasers, eg, titanium-doped sapphire. Optical parametric oscillators are also developing as useful spectroscopic sources. In the infrared, tunable laser semiconductor diodes have been employed. The tunable diode lasers which contain lead salts have been employed for remote monitoring of poUutant species. Needs for infrared spectroscopy provide an impetus for continued development of tunable infrared lasers (see Infrared technology and RAMAN spectroscopy). 

Coatings, Paints, and Pigments. Various slightly soluble molybdates, such as those of zinc, calcium, and strontium, provide long-term corrosion control as undercoatings on ferrous metals (90—92). The mechanism of action presumably involves the slow release of molybdate ion, which forms an insoluble ferric molybdate protective layer. This layer is insoluble in neutral or basic solution. A primary impetus for the use of molybdenum, generally in place of chromium, is the lower toxicity of the molybdenum compound. 

Although these other chemical systems ate feasible chemically, there has been httie impetus to solve associated equipment problems. The Bosch reaction appears to be the most promising. 

The impetus to develop the petroleum refining industry came from several changes in life-styles. The increased needs for illuminants, for fuel to drive the factories of the industrial revolution, for gasoline to power the automobiles, as well as the demand for aviation fuel, all contributed to the increased use of petroleum.
