In recasting racism this way, Memmi calls into question both the source and the aim of its unfolding. One cannot help but notice the implicit reference here to Freud s four basic elements of the drive source, aim, object, and force (or impetus). Although Memmi seems to have a sense of racism s aim and object—to inferiorize its victim—he is at a loss to understand its source and force except to locate each in the realm of affect. [Pg.263]

Detonation (and Explosion), Energy Relationships in. Under the title "Energy Relationships , C.G. Dunkle treats in the lecture, delivered at Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ on Dec 13, 1955, pp 10-14, the following subjects a) Heat and energy of reaction of expls b) Heats of detonation and explosion c) Alternate deton rates d) Force, power or impetus of expls e) Brisance and f) Detonation pressure... [Pg.266]

The impetus for this suggestion came from two different sources. After the discovery in 1967 that the cosmic microwave background was isotropic to at least the 0.1 percent level, many were asking What sorts of initial conditions could have made this possible after billions of years had passed Brandon Carter and others posed a different query What if the fundamental dimensionless constants of nature, like the ratios between the strengths of the four fundamental forces or the value of the fine-structure constant, were to be slightly different What difference would it make to the prospects of life It was the direction ultimately taken in response to the former of these questions that drew the attention of the wider public to the phenomenon that would later be dubbed fine-tuning. ... [Pg.72]

Boerhaave s prescription of mercury in venereal diseases depends upon the principle that remedies have to work in accordance with the motions of the body. For example infusions and decoctions only work when the vital motion of the living body mixes them with the bodily humours and transports them to the parts of the body where they are supposed to act their own peculiar force. Mercury, likewise, only works on account of the vital force moving the solid and fluid parts. This means that it cannot do any good when the disorder is seated in a part where the force of the heart and arteries cannot be felt. So, for example mercury is of no use when the marrow of bones is affected or when a gonorrhoea is situated in the cavities of the penis, where the humours have a very weak impetus. On the other hand ... [Pg.207]

In this particular instance Major Wilson was probably right. But, in retrospect, this incident and the supply operations which it represents assume more significance than the immediate problems imply, for this operation marks the bifurcation of the chemical supply system. Henceforth, one element of the chemical supply system was oriented, despite doctrine to the contrary, to an impetus from the front. This element of the system was primarily devoted to meeting the demands and special requirements of the combat forces, especially for new equipment, such as the lightweight mechanical smoke generator, or equipment used in new missions, such as the 4.2-inch chemical mortar. ... [Pg.110]
