Supreme power

The brilliant book which provided the impetus for the ecological movement - and has retained its supreme power to this day. 

A theory which has prevailed for generations in natural science, and has been accepted and used by everyone, can be replaced by a more accurate description of the relations between natural facts, only by the determination, labour, and genius of a man of supreme power. Such a service to science, and humanity, was rendered by Darwin a like service was done, more than three-quarters of a century before Darwin, by Lavoisier. 

Cycloadditions are supremely powerful when it comes to the controlled formation of many stereo-genic centres. The stereochemistry of the products can be the result of many different stereochemical aspects. Though strictly this example does not have a place in this chapter (because relative stereochemistry is not generated), it is instructive. 

I have evolved. I have evolved as a person. 1 have evolved as a chemistry instructor. I have evolved as an author. These statements are probably true of any chemistry instructor who has spent some 30- to 40-odd years in a teaching career as I have. Back in 1977,1 was extremely fortunate to have Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska, rescue me from chemistry oblivion and offer me the job that I have loved for so long. It has been my niche, you might say, and 1 appreciate the powers that be at SCC and the Supreme Powers that be to have given me this opportunity so many years ago. 

Do not doubt, therefore, that this duty of ours derives from religion, when God - as the gospel tells us - makes his sun rise on the good and the evil, and rains on the just and the unjust [Mt 5.45]. For with God there is no injustice he possesses supreme power, he not only sees what everyone is like but even foresees what they will be like he alone can judge infallibly, he cannot be deceived in what he knows.
