Liquid household bleach is generally a 5% solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Ammonia cleansers—including general household cleansers, wax removers, glass and window cleaners, and oven cleaners — are aqueous solutions of 5-10% ammonia, NH3. Mixing bleach with cleansers containing ammonia leads to the formation of a family of potentially toxic compounds known as chloramines. These toxic gases have acrid fumes that can bum mucous membranes. Scented bleaches can mask one s natural ability to detect these harmful fumes. 

Household ammonia, liquid window cleaners, liquid all-purpose cleaners and various other household cleaning products constitute this small market for ammonia. Ammonia is also used in the manufacture of ammonium salts of alcohol, ether and sulfates. These compounds are widely used as surfactants in detergents that are in liquid dishwashing formulations57. 

Already the VOC concern is prompting some manufacturers of household products such as air fresheners and window cleaners to change their formulations, thereby creating new challenges with respect to perfume solubility. It is impossible to estimate at this time to what extent in the future this concern will confront the perfumer with additional questions and challenges at the international level. 

OSHAdoes not require an employer to have Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for household consumer products (e.g., window cleaner) when the products are used in the workplace in the same manner as a consumer would use them. In other words, when the duration and frequency of use, and therefore exposure, is not greater than what the typical consumer would experience. This exemption is based upon how the chemical is used in the workplace, and also how the chemical manufacturer intended the chemical to be used. 

Many of the substances we encounter in our daily lives are acids, bases, or salts. Many fruits and vegetables are acidic because of the citric acid in them. Vinegar and lemon juice are acidic. Many household substances, including baking soda and window cleaners, are bases. Ionic compounds that are not acids or bases are classified as salts, of which table salt (NaCl) is certainly the most familiar. 

Other household cleaners are water based and therefore polar. Window cleaners are a good example. Window cleaners often contain ammonia, which is a weak base. Vinegar, which contains the weak acid acetic acid, works well, too. Acids and bases tend to be polar, which is why they are soluble in water.

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a very sharp odor. The odor is familiar to most people because ammonia is used in smelling salts, household cleaners, and window cleaning products. 

The Avanel S-70 provides for removal of organic surface deposits and. by surface tension reduction, better contact between the aluminum surface and the organic acids. In addition to industrial applications like cleaning ovei—the-road aluminum trailers and aluminum prior to anodizing, this cleaner may also be used in household applications such as cleaning aluminum flashing, windows and door fixtures. Ammonia solution is a household cleaner with many uses. To clean windows, you can prepare a diluted solution by mixing 1 tablespoon of ammonia solution with 1 quart of water. If the undiluted solution contains 10 percent ammonia, what percent of the diluted solution is ammonia (Hint 1 tablespoon =15 mL, and 1 quart = 0.95 L)... 

If you do use a regular vacuum cleaner, have another member of the household do the vacuuming when you are pregnant. Children (and pregnant women) will inhale less dust if vacuuming is done when they are not home and the windows are left open. It is recommended that you allow the dust to settle at least an hour before children (or pregnant women) come back in the room. 

Sources of chemical contributions to indoor air can come from ambient air through open windows and through the HVAC system. However, this is usually a minor component of indoor air contamination, becanse the amount of air entering a structure from outside is usually small relative to the amount of air in the structure. Other sources of chemicals to indoor air include household cleaners and furniture. New furniture and carpeting contains formaldehyde, a solvent that volatilizes into indoor air. Several other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common sonrces of chemicals in indoor air, as shown in table 10.3.
