It would be difficult to over-estimate the extent to which the BET method has contributed to the development of those branches of physical chemistry such as heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption or particle size estimation, which involve finely divided or porous solids in all of these fields the BET surface area is a household phrase. But it is perhaps the very breadth of its scope which has led to a somewhat uncritical application of the method as a kind of infallible yardstick, and to a lack of appreciation of the nature of its basic assumptions or of the circumstances under which it may, or may not, be expected to yield a reliable result. This is particularly true of those solids which contain very fine pores and give rise to Langmuir-type isotherms, for the BET procedure may then give quite erroneous values for the surface area. If the pores are rather larger—tens to hundreds of Angstroms in width—the pore size distribution may be calculated from the adsorption isotherm of a vapour with the aid of the Kelvin equation, and within recent years a number of detailed procedures for carrying out the calculation have been put forward but all too often the limitations on the validity of the results, and the difficulty of interpretation in terms of the actual solid, tend to be insufficiently stressed or even entirely overlooked. And in the time-honoured method for the estimation of surface area from measurements of adsorption from solution, the complications introduced by... [Pg.292]

Galvanic cells in which stored chemicals can be reacted on demand to produce an electric current are termed primaiy cells. The discharging reac tion is irreversible and the contents, once exhausted, must be replaced or the cell discarded. Examples are the dry cells that activate small appliances. In some galvanic cells (called secondaiy cells), however, the reaction is reversible that is, application of an elec trical potential across the electrodes in the opposite direc tion will restore the reactants to their high-enthalpy state. Examples are rechargeable batteries for household appliances, automobiles, and many industrial applications. Electrolytic cells are the reactors upon which the electrochemical process, elec troplating, and electrowinning industries are based. [Pg.2409]

Since the kW developed by a 3-0 winding is 50% more than by a 2-0 winding for the same value of stator current /, the economics of this principle is employed in an induction motor for general and industrial use. As standard practice, therefore, in a multi-phase system, only 3-0 induction motors are manufactured and employed, except for household appliances and applications, where mostly single-phase motors are ttsed. [Pg.6]

Nitrile (Buna-N) is a rubber compound popular in most household plumbing applications. It s a basic plumbers o-ring seal, and handles most household liquids and chemicals. Because industry pumps so much water, this elastomer may be the single most popular o-ring seeondary seal in the world. Its service range is from -30° F to +250° F (-34° C. to +120 C). [Pg.206]

Substantial quantities of UPVC are also used for blow moulded containers for such diverse materials as consumable liquids such as fruit squashes, liquids for household use such as detergents and disinfectants, cosmetics and toiletries, and pharmaceuticals. For most of these applications UPVC is in competition with at least one other polymer, particularly poly(ethylene) terephthalate (Chapter 25), polyethylene (Chapter 10), polypropylene (Chapter 11) and, to a small extent, the nitrile resins (Chapter 15). The net result is that in recent years there has been some replacement of PPVC in these areas, in part because of problems of waste disposal. [Pg.357]

SAN is also used for pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging. Usage breakdown for Western Europe in the early 1990s has been estimated at 28% for household products, 21% for domestic electrical applications, 8% for battery casings, 12% for pharmaceutical/cosmetic packaging and a large figure of 31% for other applications. [Pg.441]

Other important application areas in both regions are household appliances, consumer electronic equipment, refrigerator sheeting, toys, telephones, office equipment, recreational equipment, luggage and as a modifier for PVC. [Pg.464]

Rubber base adhesives, also called elastomeric adhesives, are widely used in industrial and household applications. In fact, about one-third of the adhesives used in the World are made from natural or synthetic rubbers. Some of the elastomeric adhesive systems showing industrial importance in recent years are the following ... [Pg.573]

Electrostatic precipitation is one of the fundamental means of separating solid or liquid particles from gas streams. This technique has been utilized in numerous applications, including industrial gas-cleaning systems, air cleaning in general ventilation systems, and household room air cleaners. [Pg.1211]

Electrostatic precipitators have been used in various gas-cleaning applications almost for a century. During the past decades, a large number of modifi cations to electrostatic precipitators have been developed, the nn.ist common being duct and pipe types. The utilization of electrostatic precipitation extends from small household air cleaners up to huge industrial gas-cleaning systems. [Pg.1230]

The perfection of the electric household mechanical refrigerator by the 1930s provided a technology applicable to home air conditioning. This technology... [Pg.26]
