Grease, removal

Air flotation is one of the oldest methods for the removal of solids, oil grease and fibrous materials from wastewater. Suspended solids and oil grease removals as high as 99%+ can be attained with these processes. 

To check the efficacy of grease removal, the alkali solution is rinsed away or neutralised by dipping in dilute acid. If, after removal from the acid, the draining metal surface remains wetted evenly all over for 30-60 s (or until it dries by evaporation), hydrophobic soils have been removed. Traces of grease cause the surface to de-wet, and surface tension draws the water into separate droplets. This is the water-break test. Traces of grease which remain when the work is plated do not prevent electrodeposition, but are detrimental to adhesion and corrosion resistance. 

A variety of formulations exist for cleaning organics from burners and other fireside areas. Soot, oil, and grease removers are widely available the formulations are often very specific and can be produced in both aqueous and nonaqueous solvent bases. Nonaqueous solvents commonly include petroleum spirit, naphtha, or odorless kerosene. 

Abstract The aim of this work was to study the simultaneous effect of amount of clay, activation temperature, contact time, pH, and size of the adsorbent on the retention of oil-grease thermally activated illite by adsorption. The values obtained for the percentage of oil-grease removed ranged from 93.87% for 110°C up to 66.73% for 900°C. According to the vendor, the approximate cost of using organoclay to remove oil and grease from wastewater at the U.S. Department of Defense s (DOD s) Hill Air Force Base in Utah was 0.55 to 0.65 per 1000 gal. The influent water contained grease, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. It is not clear whether this cost estimate was for the entire treatment system or only for oil and grease removal (D149001). 

This product should be a clear liquid. Its grease-removing and cleaning power can be slightly improved by adding a small amount of organic surfactant such as Triton W-30.

If, after tanning, a soluble resin is added and the leather is dried and milled in the presence of melted grease, a flexible but resilient product is obtained that can be rewet, within limits, and dried again to the same esthetically pleasing product. This hot-stuffed leather is actually a commercial product used for the upper parts of shoes. The product is not stable, however, to dry cleaning, which removes the grease. The grease removed from this dry-cleaned leather must be replaced. 

Another important class of nonionics are amine oxides, such as DMDAO (dimethyldodecyl amine oxide) and CAPAO (cocoamidopropyldimethyl amine oxide). This type of surfactant is nonionic at pH values above its pKa and cationic below that point. When functioning as a nonionic, amine oxides have many useful properties. They interact strongly with anionics which can result in performance benefits [17]. Amine oxides help to mitigate anionic surfactant irritation, act as foam stabilizers, and can also function to improve grease removal.
