BMW produces cars in eight plants located in Germany, United Kingdom, the United States, and South Africa. Its engines are manufactured at [Pg.276]

The basic supply chain model was a multi-period MILP. The binary variables identified whether a certain product was produced at a given plant. The continuous variables represented the annual volume in supply, production, and distribution. The objective function included fixed capital expenditure as well as variable costs for supply, production, and distribution. An example model in the case study had 6 plants, 36 products, and 8 sales regions for a 12 year planning horizon. The MILP model had 60,000 variables (2000 binary) and 145,000 constraints. The model was solved using the ILOG/CPLEX solver on a 1.6GHz processor injust4min  [Pg.277]

The use of the MILP model improved BMW s long-term strategic planning process. It made the planning process more transparent and reduced the planning effort. It also resulted in the reduction of 5.7% in investment and the cost of materials, production, and distribution. [Pg.277]

AT T provides telecommunication equipment and long-distance services to the telemarketing industry. To help its telemarketing customers for their site location decisions, AT T developed a decision support system (DSS) (Spencer et al., 1990). When the 800-service was introduced in 1967, the cost of 800 -service determined their locations, since the labor cost was minimal. The Midwest, particularly Omaha (Nebraska), became the 800-cap-tial of the world. However, in the 1980s, labor cost started becoming very significant. AT T provided the decision support system (DSS) as a value-added service to its customers. [Pg.277]

The DSS was basically a MILP model, similar to the capacitated facility location model we discussed in Section 5.2.3 (Example 5.5). The MILP model determined the best locations for the telemarketing centers from a set of candidate locations, and the volume of customer traffic from different regions handled by each center. The objective was to minimize the total cost of labor, fixed facility, and conununication. For example, in 1988, the model helped 46 AT T telemarketing customers with their site location decisions. AT T got business worth 375M in annual communication revenues and 31M in equipment sales. [Pg.277]

Rt is ironic that such an intensely computational mathematical science as chaos theory owes much of its modern origin to calculations that were performed not on a large mainframe computer but rather a simple programmable pocket calculator, a Hewlett-Packard HP-65 Feigenbaum would explain years later that had the series of intermediate calculations not been carried out sufficiently slowly, it is likely that most of the key observations would have been missed [feigSOa]. [Pg.177]

Ethylene hydrogenation was carried out in a once-through flow reactor. The effluent gas mixture was analyzed with an online gas chromatograph (Hewlett-Packard HP 6890) equipped with an AI2O3 capillary column and a flame ionization detector. Testing conditions included Phydrogen = 200 Torr, Pethyiene = 40 Torr, catalyst mass of 10 to 20 mg and temperature varied from -50 to -25°C. [Pg.210]

The waxes, the organic phase, and the aqueous products, on the contrary, were unloaded daily from the collection traps and analyzed with an off-line GC (Hewlett-Packard model 6890) equipped with two flame ionization detectors and two identical columns (Hewlett-Packard HP-5), one connected to an on-column injector and dedicated to the analysis of waxes (dissolved in CS2 before the injection), and the other connected to a split/splitless injector and used for the analysis of the liquid reaction products (aqueous and organic phases). CH3CN was added to the aqueous sample prior to the injection as internal standard. [Pg.297]

Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. In the experiments, about 2 mg of sample was pyrolyzed at 900°C in flowing helium using a Chemical Data System (CDS) Platinum Coil Pyrolysis Probe controlled by a CDS Model 122 Pyroprobe in normal mode. Products were separated on a 12 meter fused capillary column with a cross-linked poly (dimethylsilicone) stationary phase. The GC column was temperature programmed from -50 to 300°C. Individual compounds were identified with a Hewlett Packard (HP) Model 5995C low resolution quadruple GC/MS System. Data acquisition and reduction were performed on the HP 100 E-series computer running revision E RTE-6/VM software. [Pg.547]

For this reason, electrochemical measuring cells are usually based on a three-electrode arrangement. In the Hewlett-Packard HP 1049A Electrochemical Detector it functions as follows (see Figure 2-3). [Pg.12]

The relevant characteristics of these designs and the Hewlett-Packard HP 1049A Electrochemical Detector cell design will be evaluated in this chapter. [Pg.23]

A disadvantage of the described reference electrode is its maintenance porous frits may dry out, Cl solution needs refreshment from time to time. Therefore the Hewlett-Packard HP 1049A Electrochemical Detector cell contains a solid state, in situ Ag/AgCl reference electrode as a standard with the refillable electrode described above as an option. [Pg.35]

The Hewlett-Packard HP 1049A Electrochemical Detector cell has a unique system for working electrode replacement the working electrode itself (an 8 mm diameter disc) can be removed from its holder, allowing for economic working electrode replacement in case the working electrode surface cannot be restored. [Pg.41]

The Hewlett-Packard HP 1049A Electrochemical Detector cellbody (see Figure 3-9) functions as the auxiliary electrode thereby shielding cell inlet, outlet and reference electrode effectively against indirect influence of electric field changes via the liquid lines. [Pg.41]

Aqueous-phase concentrations of PCE were determined by GC using a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Model 6890 gas chromatograph equipped with an autosampler, a precolumn surfactant trap, an HP-5 crosslinked 5% PH Siloxane column, and a flame ionization detector (FID). The precolumn trap was installed to prevent surfactant fouling of GC inlets, column and detector. Samples were prepared by adding approximately 0.4 mL of aqueous sample to 1.2 mL of isopropanol in glass autosampler vials. The GC vials were sealed with Teflon backed aluminum caps to minimize volatilization. Triplicate injections of each sample were performed. [Pg.292]

Electrophoretic systems for CEC which allow the pressurization of the separation capillary from both sides (see 9.2.1) up to 12 bar are commercially available. Hewlett Packard (HP) (now Agilent, Waldbronn, Germany) provides an option for pressurization up to 12 bar and Beckmann/Coulter (Fullerton CA, USA) up to 8 bar. Also some home-made instruments are described in the literature. [Pg.338]

Analyses were carried out on a Hewlett Packard HP 5840 A gas chromatograph operated Isothermally at 150°C. A 25-m capillary column packed with crosslinked phenylmethylsi1icone was employed. 2-Methyl-1,3-cyclo-pentanedione and 2-methyl-2-(3-oxobutyl)-1,3-cyclopentanedione had retention times of ca. 7 min and 12.5 min, respectively. [Pg.30]

The L-(-)-proline was established by the checkers to be of >99.8% (estimated level of detection) enantiomeric purity by conversion to N-pentafluoropropionyl-L-(-)-proline isopropyl ester and GLC analysis on a 50-m glass capillary column containing the chiral phase, Chirasil-Val (Quadrex Inc.). Analyses were performed on a Hewlett-Packard HP 5710 A instrument operated isothermally at 140°C. Racemic proline was used as a control. [Pg.30]

GLC analysis was carried out on a Hewlett Packard HP 5710 A gas chromatograph operated isothermally at 155°C. A 50-m capillary column of 0V-17 on fused silica was employed. The enone had a retention time of ca. 14.5 min. [Pg.32]

GC analysis was performed on a column with the following properties Hewlett-Packard HP 5702A, 2 m x 1/4" 0V-101 column, programmed 70-200°C at 8°C/m1n. [Pg.70]
