Every year 10% of the American chemists spend 40 hours in conference rooms and use 19 pounds of paper. Even if this statement is not a truthful one, it expresses one of the well established forms of scientific statements, namely a statistical one. We are quite used to dealing with statistics, the collection and analysis of data and the drawing of conclusions from this data ( 2. ) In a scientific way, this mode constitutes no problem. On the other hand compare these two statements Get a shot against the flu because only very few of the inoculated people will get the flu, versus Get a shot against the flu, because only 3% of the inoculated people will get the flu . The second statement provides more precise information than the first. [Pg.2]

The first meeting was with two or three chemists in dark suits and ties who were introduced to me and a half dozen other research chemists as being government researchers in the area of potentially interesting synthetic organic chemicals. We were not told from which laboratory they came and the only clues to their areas of interest were two synthetic reaction sequences which had been drawn on the conference room blackboard. The man with the chalk told us that these two pictures had been worked out successfully, and their question was could any of us propose a last step which might link them together. The bottom compounds in the two schemes were followed by arrows which pointed to an empty area at the bottom of the blackboard. 1 asked them why not draw in the structure of the desired product and they said that they were not at liberty to do so. [Pg.380]

Sea water feed for the stills is pumped from the Halifax River, which at the point of feed intake has a salinity of about 35,000 p.p.m., the same as that of the ocean. Much of the research instrumentation is housed in a centrally located concrete block shelter, which was constructed underground principally to prevent its shading the nearby stills. One of the previously existing buildings on the reservation was renovated to provide an office, a conference room, and equipment storage space. [Pg.169]

As you go in the entrance, you enter into a hallway. On your left is the secretary s office. Go down the hall and turn right. The president s office is near the end of the hall way on your left. Now turn right again and walk a little way down the hall. The conference room is on your left, and the exit is directly in front of you. [Pg.155]

Illustration of diagrammatic and viewer space in ASL. The semi-circles represent signing space. Each letter represents the location in signing space associated with that particular landmark, where EN = entrance SO = secretary s office PO = president s office CR = conference room and EX = exit. The asterisk in the viewer space description indicates that the two offices and the conference room were associated with that location in signing space. [Pg.155]

Later, a telephone call came to Dickinson. Captain Everett wanted to talk to me in the room where we had met that morning. I walked promptly up the stairs to the conference room, knocked on the door, and was admitted by the doctor. After a brief formal exchange the doctor said, Let me listen to your chest to compare it with what I heard this morning. After he listened, front and back, Lungs completely clear. No change at all. You and John were closest to the leaking bulb. Since you are clear, the others must be also. Tell me, where do you think that gas went ... [Pg.51]

The stove can be started and operated indoors with no exhaust fans and no odor of burning wood. We have taken the stove to India and the Philippines and cooked with the Turbo Stove in small villages and on conference room desks with no odor. While the Turbo Stove currently uses a 12 Volt 3 Watt blower, the power could come from stored compressed air, bellows, wind-up generators, photovoltaic, thermophotovoltaic, windup motors, thermoelectric or other sources. [Pg.695]
