Welding electrodes

Beryllium is used as an alloying agent in producing beryllium copper, which is extensively used for springs, electrical contacts, spot-welding electrodes, and non-sparking tools. It is applied as a structural material for high-speed aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, and communication satellites. Other uses include windshield frame, brake discs, support beams, and other structural components of the space shuttle. 

For the production of lamp-filament wire, aluminum, potassium, and siHcon dopants are added to the blue oxide. Some dopants are trapped in the tungsten particles upon reduction. Excess dopants are then removed by washing the powder in hydroflouric acid. Eor welding electrodes and some other appHcations, thorium nitrate is added to the blue oxide. After reduction, the thorium is present as a finely dispersed thorium oxide. 

Ha2ards encountered with tungsten may be caused by substances associated with the production and use of tungsten, eg. As, Sb, Pb, and other impurities in tungsten ores, Co aerosols and dust in the carbide industry, and thoria used in welding electrodes. Lanthanum is being promoted as a substitute for thoria in this appHcation. 

Welding Electrodes. Welding electrodes shall conform to applicable AWS and ASTM specifications or other governing codes. Newly developed welding processes shall use welding electrodes conforming to applicable AWS or other governing publications. Certified reports shall constitute sufficient evidence of conformity with the specifications.

Alloys with thoria (Th02> are used for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding electrodes and in electronic applications where its increased electron emission properties and high temperature strength prove advantageous. 

Common items such as valves, piping and welding electrodes which may be supplied for a large plant in half a dozen material specifications can become mixed up due to poor identification marking. 

Our fuel cell test fixture was made from a commercially available membrane filter holder. We spot-welded electrode studs to the two halves of the fixture case, one for the hydrogen side and one for the oxygen (air) side.

The largest titanium reserves in the world are in the form of anatase and titano-magnetite, but these cannot be worked economically at the present time. About 95 % of the world s production of ilmenite and rutile is used to produce TiOz pigments, the remainder for the manufacture of titanium metal and in welding electrodes.

Stray-current Corrosion. Stray currents in the past have resulted from DC-powered trolled systems, which have become obsolete. An electric welding machine on board a ship with a grounded DC line located on shore will cause accelerated attack of the ship s hull as the stray currents generated at the welding electrodes pass out of the ship s hull through the water back to the shore. Houses in close proximity can dramatically corrode at the waterline. The pipes in one house can be completely corroded, while those in the neighboring house may be intact.
