Global Estimators

From this measure, the intrinsic dimensionality can be expressed as [Pg.45]

The correlation dimension method builds on the idea of the correlation integral, defined as [Pg.45]

As with the Box-Counting dimension, the intrinsic dimension can be estimated from the correlation dimension by examining the plot of log Cm (r) versus log r and estimating the linear part of the curve. [Pg.45]

The continuous interchange of nitrogen between the atmosphere and the biosphere is called the nitrogen cycle. Global estimates are difficult to obtain and there are frequently regional and local impacts which vary greatly from the mean. However, some indication of the size of the various reservoirs of nitrogen in the atmosphere, on land, and in the seas is... [Pg.408]

There are two types of data necessary to obtain accurate global estimates of vegetation carbon pools or biomass. First, it is important to have accurate data on the areal extent of major ecosystems. Matthews (29) found that calculations of global biomass were significantly influenced by the land cover data set used. Second, there must be accurate estimates of biomass density for terrestrial ecosystems. There is a wide range of estimates published for the same ecosystem, each derived by different methods (29), and none having statistical reliability (7). [Pg.421]

As the mere disappearance of the parent pollutants cannot be considered as complete degradation and in some opportunities degradation-intermediates can be even more toxic than their parent compounds, a global estimation of toxicity was necessary to determine the reduction of toxic potential in the fungal-treated sludge. The standardized tests of acute immobilization of Daphnia magna and bioluminescence inhibition of Vibrio fischeri were accordingly applied. [Pg.152]

The rank of C is 3, so the system is globally nonestimable. Obviously, a globally estimable system can be obtained by increasing the instrumentation cost. [Pg.31]

It follows directly that any globally estimable system is also structurally estimable. [Pg.38]

From a scientific point of view, glomerular filtration rate (inulin or creatinine clearance) is the best global estimate of renal function. Other parameters of interest include, but are not limited to ... [Pg.266]

The global hydrological cycle. Rates are In units of km /y and reservoir volumes In km . Note that global estimates of rates and reservoirs are still a matter of uncertainty leading to the ranges reported In the figure. Sources-. (1) Gleick, P. M. (1993). Water in Crisis. Because of uncertainties in global estimates, these values differ somewhat from the estimates in Table 1.1. Data from 1983 are from Nriagu, J. 0. (1990). Hydrothermal venting injects fluids into seawater as buoyant, jetlike pliunes. These turbulent flows mix rapidly with seawater becoming diluted by factors of lO" to 10. This mixing eventually makes the plumes neutrally buoyant, after which they are transported laterally through the ocean basins as part of the intermediate and deepwater currents. Hydrothermal plumes have the potential to greatly affect seawater chemistry. From global estimates of hydrothermal fluid emissions and dilution ratios, a volume of seawater equivalent to the entire ocean can be entrained in the hydrothermal plumes every few thousand years. [Pg.493]

Some of the NPP models are based on the color imagery and some are not. In the latter, phytoplankton growth is estimated from coupled global circulation and biogeo-chemical models in which water motion controls nutrient availability. The water motion is controlled by climatic factors, such as temperature gradients and wind stress. The latest effort to compare model outputs was conducted with 31 different models and foimd that global estimates for a test year (1998) differed by as much as a factor of 2 The mean results from this model intercalibration experiment are shown in Table 23.7. [Pg.655]

For the sake of completeness, of conrse analytical resnlts also inclnde the total analytical error (TAE) in addition to all sampling errors. The snm of these two categories is termed the global estimation error (GEE), which thus includes all possible errors which could ever be of interest in PAT ... [Pg.48]

Gas hydrates were first reported at the beginning of the 19th century, and until the 1930s they remained a scientific curiosity. At that time it was realized that hydrates were more likely to be the causative agent in blocking pipelines than ice. Today, gas hydrate control continues to be a problem in the oil and gas industry. In the 1960 s it was realized that natural gas hydrates are present in the geo-sphere with worldwide reserves estimated at 10,000 to 40,000 trillion cubic meters (TCM). Considerable efforts are underway to refine global estimates and to develop technology and exploit this resource. On the other hand these hydrates may... [Pg.9]

The approach taken to come up with ATS production estimates is one of triangulation, estimating production based on reported seizures of the end products in combination with some assumptions of law enforcement effectiveness, seizure data of precursor chemicals and estimates based on the number of consumers and their likely levels of per capita consumption. The average of these three estimates is then used to arrive at UNODCs global estimates for amphetamine, methamphetamine and ecstasy production. The estimation procedure remained largely unchanged from the one used since the... [Pg.261]

A global estimate of the level of abuse of specific drugs involves the following steps ... [Pg.263]

The approach taken to arrive at the global estimates has remained essentially the same since the first attempt was made in 1997. [Pg.263]
