Pre-1980 —Flat File Storage of Chemical Structures. Computers consisted of mainframe machines (e.g., IBM 3090) and small minicomputers (Digital, Prime). Users connected through low speed serial connections, using "dumb" terminals (no graphics capability) or monochrome vector graphics terminals such as Tektronix and Imlac. Chemical structures were mainly stored as either (l)individ-ual structure files, indexed by name, and handled one or a few structures at a time or (2) in a flat-file database accessed by record number (26). Perhaps a chemical analogy to this state of affairs can be drawn. The file storage systems would be the equivalent of a container filled with an inert gas. Infrared absorbance detectors. For completeness we should note that IR detectors for HPLC do exist. As is the case for GC-IR (Section 12.8.2) a continuous rapid response HPLC-IR detector benefits from FTIR spectral acquisition and computerized data file storage. Such spectra as may be obtained have spectral peak widths more characteristic of a liquid matrix, instead of the more information rich, sharp gas phase GC-IR peaks. The major drawback to IR detection in HPLC is that most of the commonly useful HPLC mobile phases absorb strongly in many areas of the IR spectral region. Thus HPLC-IR can be used for only a very limited set of analytes. [Pg.816]

Server Software which can be invoked through a request for a service (from a so-called client) and which is dedicated to providing that service, for example a file server which provides file storage and access services. This term is often used for the computer system which provides the service, but, in fact, a server and client can be two distinct pieces of software residing on the same physical computer system. [Pg.199]
