Many methods are available for analysis of petroleum hydrocarbon products, particularly in water and soil matrices. The above-mentioned chemical catalytic routes lead to racemic AHA mixtures. For the direct use of LA (or its esters) as a solvent or platform molecule for achiral molecules like acrylic acid and pyruvic acid, stereochemistry does not matter. The properties of the polyester PLA, the major application of LA, however, suffer tremendously if d and l isomers are built in irregularly [28]. This is exemplified by atactic PLA, made from racemic LA, which is an amorphous polymer with low performance and limited application. However, when l- and D-lactic acid are processed separately into their respective isotactic L- and d-PLA, as discovered by Tsuji et al., a stereocomplex is formed upon blending these polymers. This polymer exhibits enhanced mechanical and thermal properties [28, 164]. A productive route to D-Iactic acid is, however, missing today. If the chemocatalytic routes to LA are to become viable, enantiomer resolution of the racemate needs to be performed. Given separation success, a cheap source of o-lactic acid will be unlocked immediately, providing an additional advantage over the fermentation route (cfr. Table 2).

This paper has examined problems associated with the specification and realisation of functional safety requirements for the human elements of a system for which a target level of safety is specified at the service level. It was shown that the high-level allocation of functions to hardware, software or humans must be done by taking human performance and limitations into account and a generic approach was presented for the specification of both service-level and system-level safety requirements down to the allocation of functions and safety requirements to subsystems. 

However, all necessary system components such as cables, couplers, sources, demodulation units, require reflection with regard to reliability and stability, especially, when standard fiber sensor components are modified according to specific requirements or for critical application [59-62]. Users of measurement systems want to be definitely sure that a chosen sensor system is suitable and reliable for the specific intended use. A very useful method is the vahdation procedure of a measurement system or of components of it because they then get assured information about performance and limitations of a sensor system. Then they are able to draw feasible conclusions. Vahdation is explained in the international standard ISO/IEC 17025 of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) [63]. According to this standard, validation is the confirmation by examination and the provision of objective evidence that the particular requirements for a specific intended use are fulfilled. 

The most important application fields of drag reduction effect are fire-fighting, storm-sewer, flow augmentation, and pipes design for the transport of different fluids, with the performances and limits described by J.W. Hoyt in ref. [1080].
