Vector graphics

The graphics is interactive and needs a SVG (scalable vector graphic) plug-in, which can be downloaded from the Adobe home page. 

Pre-1980 —Flat File Storage of Chemical Structures. Computers consisted of mainframe machines (e.g., IBM 3090) and small minicomputers (Digital, Prime). Users connected through low speed serial connections, using "dumb" terminals (no graphics capability) or monochrome vector graphics terminals such as Tektronix and Imlac. Chemical structures were mainly stored as either (l)individ-ual structure files, indexed by name, and handled one or a few structures at a time or (2) in a flat-file database accessed by record number (26). A typical corporate database contained up to a few tens of thousands of structures. 

The viewer generates images in PNG, PDF, and PS formats. The bitmap PNG format can be directly used for websites and presentation software that is not able to cope with vector graphics. On the other hand, the vector graphics output can be used for the generation of bitmap images of any resolution (see Note 5). 

This will open GSview. If there is a Document Structuring convention Error, the error can be safely ignored by clicking Ignore all DSC. Postscript files can be easily converted the to other formats through the File/Convert menu. Note however, that postscript (and pdf) files contain resolution independent vector graphics that... 

All documents with character- pixel- and vector-graphics can be reproduced with the PDF/A-1 standard, because all the elements, such as fonts, are embedded in the file.

Comment. Often Mathcad includes the SmartSketch application that works with vector graphics but not with bitmapped one. In addition, Mathcad can exchange data with applications such as AutoCAD. 

At last, the vector graphics is one in which the shape of a curve is defined by a math function. Vector graphics are basically points connected by curves of various shapes, filled with solid or gradient colors. 

Searching for chemical structures requires a specific graphical component of the software, as a Tektronix emulation is necessary. In contrast to the majority of graphic programs which are based on vector graphics, chemical structures are recorded as a dot matrix.
