Although urea is an organic compound, it is best discussed with other ammonia-derived synthetic nitrogen compounds, especially in view of its importance to the fertilizer industry like the other compounds in this chapter. It is made easily from ammonia and carbon dioxide. 

Water pollution trends have particularly worsened in China in recent years. The industrial development (as certified from oil demand) and the intensive agriculture (China is the world s largest consumer of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers) pose a threat to water bodies.

Since no economical nitrogen fixation process that starts with nitrogen oxides has been discovered, ammonia has developed into the most important building block for synthetic nitrogen products worldwide. Prior to World War II, ammonia production capacity remained relatively stable. But during the war the need for explosives caused an increase in the production of ammonia for nitric acid manufacture. Then, after the war, the ammonia plants were used to manufacture fertilizers. As a result, there was a rapid increase in fertilizer consumption. The advantages of fertilizers were emphasized, and production capacity increased by leaps and bounds. 

In 2008, more than 95 percent of all the phosphate rock mined in the United States was used in the manufacture of fertilizer and animal feed supplements. Modern farmers use enormous amounts of synthetic (artificial) fertilizer on their crops. This synthetic fertilizer contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the three elements critical to growing plants. These elements normally occur in the soil, but may not be present in large enough amounts. Adding them by means of synthetic fertilizer helps plants grow better. Most farmers add some form of synthetic fertilizer to their fields every year. This demand for synthetic fertilizers accounts for the major use of phosphorus compounds.

Ammonia is an essential building block for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and finds widespread use in the production of synthetic fibers, explosives, and plastics. 

In the year ending June 30, 1991, 77.0 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer were used worldwide with 10.1 million metric tons in the United States alone [4], Nitrogen can be added to soil by natural means such as crop rotation, natural organics, mineral nitrogen, or by synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. 

In natural conditions, the main source of nitrous oxide is biological denitrification (see more details in Chapter 13). This natural process is significantly uiCTeased in the whole World and in Asia as well by massive application of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Denitrification of fertilizer nitrogen leads to an increase of N2O concentration in the stratosphere (see Chapter 13 for details). 

Without iodine supplements in the form of marine fishmeal or mineral mixtures, the farm animals of most countries worldwide would suffer of iodine deficiency. Germany and most industrially developed countries unconsciously supply farm animals (and in turn the population) with iodine by fertilizing the land with Chile saltpeter, which has a high iodine content. During World War I, the importation of Chile saltpeter to Europe was stopped, and thereafter synthetic nitrogen containing no iodine was produced worldwide. To improve soil fertility and improve yield, nitrogen fertilizers are used in conventional cultivation methods. As synthetic fertilizers have environmental impacts, in the case of organic cultivation, livestock manure and legumes can be used to improve the soil condition, replacing the synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. It can be animal manure, green manure and compost. The type of organic fertilizer may be recommended based on the type and properties of soil (WWF Report, 2012).

Sustainably generated hydrogen has many uses in chemical synthesis and in synthetic fuels manufacture. In addition to its applications in fuel cells, it can be burned directly in gas turbines and internal combustion engines. It is the fuel of choice for fuel cells and, combined chanically with N2 from air, it is used to make ammonia for fertilizer and synthetic nitrogen compounds. It is a key feedstock for processes to convert biomass materials, such as sugars, to useful synthetic chemicals. And elemental H2 is a key ingredient in making synthetic fnels from coal, biomass, and even CO2.
