Bag filters. Bag filters, as discussed in Chap. 3 and illustrated in Fig. 3.66, are probably the most common method of separating particulate materials from gases. A cloth or felt filter material is used that is impervious to the particles. Bag filters are suitable for use in very high dust load conditions. They have an extremely high efficiency, but they suflFer from the disadvantage that the pressure drop across them may be high. ... [Pg.303]

In Europe and elsewhere in the world, the trend towards reformulated gasoline has scarcely begun it is very likely, however, that it will be felt around the beginning of 2000, with more or less profound impact on the refining industry. [Pg.265]

Since we did not know that we were in NDT we were unaware of others in the field and felt it to be a rather new field, we felt like explorers For us it was new and we carried on for some time blissfully unaware that Prof. Hughes had demonstrated the effect almost 100 years before and Foerster had solved most of the practical problems more than a decade earlier. We only gradually became aware that we were not alone. [Pg.273]

This form melts at 290 K, and boils at 318 K. The P form, obtained when the a form is allowed to stand for a long time at a temperature below 298 K. exists as asbestos-like, silky, felted needles and has a structure consisting ofSO tetrahedra linked together in long chains. [Pg.296]

As many different file formats have been developed since the early 1970s, the need for a standard chemical structure format has been increasingly felt. Various attempts have been made by different groups of the chemical commimity to define and push such a format, but none has achieved unanimous acceptance. [Pg.45]

Thus, we see that we have not felt the need for a nomenclature factor in the first reaction shown in Figure 3-22, for the sole reason that the nomenclature factor has a value of (-f-1 ). [Pg.199]

Variants of this method have been developed taking account of the 3 D structure of molecules. However, we have not felt it necessary to follow this path for the simplicity of the method the values obtained are remarkably good. [Pg.332]

In spite of the success of this method it was later felt that the calculation of the charge distribution in conjugated r-systems should be put on a less empirical basis. To achieve this, a modified Huckel Molecular Orbital (HMO) approach (Section 7.4) was developed. Again, the charge distribution in the r-skeleton is first calculated by the PEOE method. [Pg.333]

In summary, it seems that for most Diels-Alder reactions secondary orbital interactions afford a satisfactory rationalisation of the endo-exo selectivity. However, since the endo-exo ratio is determined by small differences in transition state energies, the influence of other interactions, most often steric in origin and different for each particular reaction, is likely to be felt. The compact character of the Diels-Alder activated complex (the activation volume of the retro Diels-Alder reaction is negative) will attenuate these eflfects. The ideas of Sustmann" and Mattay ° provide an attractive alternative explanation, but, at the moment, lack the proper experimental foundation. [Pg.7]

The facilities for experimental work were poor, with inadequate wet laboratory space. In our discussions, I mentioned to Kaprielian my interest in significantly extending my previous work into the area of hydrocarbon chemistry. I felt that by establishing a strong program of basic research and graduate education in hydrocarbon chemistry, USC could become a leader in this important field. Because the memory of the first Arab oil embargo was still fresh, this struck a chord with Kaprielian, who felt that he could sell my research interest to the trustees and establish a Hydrocarbon Research Institute at USC that could accommodate me, as well as other chemistry faculty members whose interests could fit into its framework. [Pg.111]

After completion of the award ceremony in the Concert Hall we were driven to the city hall for the Nobel banquet. By this time it was a bitterly cold, windy evening. The courtyard of the city hall was lighted by the torches of hundreds of school children lining it. It was a most impressive sight, but we felt sorry for the children, who must have braved the weather for a long while. [Pg.179]

Over the years, as mentioned, I followed the practice that, whenever in a specific area of my research I felt that I had substantially achieved my goals and that it was time to consider shifting my emphasis elsewhere, I wrote (or edited) a book or comprehensive review of the field. My books are listed in the Appendix for interested readers who want to obtain more information or details, as well as relevant literature references. [Pg.235]
