Laboratory space

The facilities for experimental work were poor, with inadequate wet laboratory space. In our discussions, I mentioned to Kaprielian my interest in significantly extending my previous work into the area of hydrocarbon chemistry. I felt that by establishing a strong program of basic research and graduate education in hydrocarbon chemistry, USC could become a leader in this important field. Because the memory of the first Arab oil embargo was still fresh, this struck a chord with Kaprielian, who felt that he could sell my research interest to the trustees and establish a Hydrocarbon Research Institute at USC that could accommodate me, as well as other chemistry faculty members whose interests could fit into its framework. 

After the War, Tom Bacon worked for a while in the ill-fated Department of Colloid Science which we met in Chapter 2. Based on the strong recommendations of her German physics colleagues, Meitner received a research position in the Stockholm laboratory of Manne Siegbahn, the Swedish physicist who had received the 1924 Nobel Prize in Physics for his precision measurements on X-ray spectra. Siegbahn provided laboratory space for Meitner, but no suitable equipment for her to continue the research she had started in Berlin, and little encouragement for her work.

The arrangement of apparatus is usually dictated to some extent by the laboratory space available but within this limitation careful preliminary planning can make the construction, use and maintenance of the apparatus easier. The apparatus should be designed so that all parts are easily accessible and so that its operation does not impose too great a physical strain on the worker due to awkwardly placed components. An apparatus, badly designed in this respect, will probably be broken much more often than a more carefully planned one. 

Procuring on-site facilities for office and laboratory space, decontamination equipment, and vehicle maintenance and repair, and sample storage, as well as on-site water, electric, telephone, and sanitary utilities... 

In setting up a new laboratory, the laboratory manager is faced with the task of taking the laboratory space, with all of its faults and imperfections and fitting in the various items of furniture and equipment in such a way that the equipment performs as well as possible. 

The new workplace was a suite of rooms in the Medical Center. About 15 researchers and students worked and studied in a total area of no more than 1800 square feet, apportioned among five or six rooms. Dr. Pribram had a small office and the only secretary. A larger room was reserved for a small PDP-8 computer and accompanying files and furniture. There were three other doors behind which laboratory space ranged in size from very small to moderately spacious. As a new post-doc student, dressed in slacks and sweater, I felt like a visitor, rather than a staff member. 

Recommendation 13. The Army should estimate the numbers of chemical analyses of each kind that will be required as closure proceeds and ensure that adequate instrumentation, laboratory space, and personnel will be available to handle them. 

The safety system was designed with regard for the particular laboratory space and the building as a whole. 

Separate laboratory space shall be provided, as needed, for the performance of the routine and specialized procedures required by nonclinical laboratory studies. 

Flamma, a small Italian fine-chemical company specializing in amino acid derivates, leased laboratory space at Shanghai, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, the so-called Medical Valley of China. Liebig had done what all successful entrepreneurs need to do. He found a niche in the market that was important but not yet adequately filled—organic chemistry, and especially organic analysis. He acquired and invented the equipment (laboratory space and apparatus, including his five-bulb potash apparatus) necessary for the effective exploitation of this niche. He found the necessary financial backing from the state and the university, showing an impressive return on investment. He advertised skillfully, that is, he published extensively, created his own journal, and encouraged his students to publish. And he built...
