We can only increase the image value of the industry if we are aware of these paradigms and apply our levers at a point where we can really make a difference -with realistic objectives, continuity, consistency in word and deed, and with concrete, easily understood examples of the benefits of the industry. At the same time, we have to be very flexible in positioning our achievements and making our opinions felt effectively in every situation in the changing economic and sociopolitical environment. 

The effects of a plasma treatment on wool such as anti-felting effect, degreasing, improved dyestuff absorption and increase in wetting properties have been documented in numerous publications [42-46]. Other changes in wool properties are summerised below ... 

As discussed above, increases in wettability have been one of the primary and well-recognized surface effects obtained on textiles with plasma systems which utilize oxygen, air, and ammonia plasmas. Other recognized benefits are enhancements in surface desizing and capillarity of natural textile fibers such as wool and cotton. Particular to the hydrophobic properties of wool fiber surfaces, we have summarized that these can be transitioned to hydrophilic to obtain a reduced felting effect. However, if there is interest in moving toward an inverse effect, hydrophobic properties, as observed on cotton fabrics, can be also induced with prescriptions of type and proportions of gas chemistries used in the plasma reaction [33]. 

Since we did not know that we were in NDT we were unaware of others in the field and felt it to be a rather new field, we felt like explorers For us it was new and we carried on for some time blissfully unaware that Prof. Hughes had demonstrated the effect almost 100 years before and Foerster had solved most of the practical problems more than a decade earlier.
