Acetate and triacetate are essentially unaffected by dilute solutions of weak acids, but strong mineral acids cause serious degradation. The results of exposure of heat-treated and untreated triacetate taffeta fabrics to various chemical reagents have been reported (9). Acetate and triacetate fibers are not affected by the perchloroethylene dry-cleaning solutions normally used in the United States and Canada. Trichloroethylene, employed to a limited extent in the UK and Europe, softens triacetate. [Pg.294]

Advanced composites and fiber-reinforced materials are used in sailcloth, speedboat, and other types of boat components, and leisure and commercial fishing gear. A ram id and polyethylene fibers are currentiy used in conveyer belts to collect valuable offshore minerals such as cobalt, uranium, and manganese. Constmction of oil-adsorbing fences made of high performance fabrics is being evaluated in Japan as well as the constmction of other pollution control textile materials for maritime use. For most marine uses, the textile materials must be resistant to biodeterioration and to a variety of aqueous pollutants and environmental conditions. [Pg.73]

Other Industrial Applications. High pressures are used industrially for many other specialized appHcations. Apart from mechanical uses in which hydrauhc pressure is used to supply power or to generate Hquid jets for mining minerals or cutting metal sheets and fabrics, most of these other operations are batch processes. Eor example, metallurgical appHcations include isostatic compaction, hot isostatic compaction (HIP), and the hydrostatic extmsion of metals. Other appHcations such as the hydrothermal synthesis of quartz (see Silica, synthetic quartz crystals), or the synthesis of industrial diamonds involve changing the phase of a substance under pressure. In the case of the synthesis of diamonds, conditions of 6 GPa (870,000 psi) and 1500°C are used (see Carbon, diamond, synthetic). [Pg.76]

Composites. The history of phenoHc resin composites goes back to the early development of phenoHc materials, when wood flour, minerals, and colorants were combined with phenoHc resins to produce mol ding compounds. In later appHcations, resin varnishes were developed for kraft paper and textile fabrics to make decorative and industrial laminates. Although phenoHcs have been well characterized in glass-reinforced composites, new developments continue in this area, such as new systems for Hquid-injection molding (LIM) and sheet-molding compounds (SMC). More compHcated composite systems are based on aramid and graphite fibers. [Pg.307]

The second main ingredient ia reiaforced plastic is the reinforcement, eg, fibers of glass, carboa, boroa, mineral, cellulose, or polymers. Reinforcements can be configured ia many ways, such as coatiauous or chopped strands, milled fibers, rovings, tows, mats, braids, and woven fabrics. [Pg.94]

Flame retardants (qv) are incorporated into the formulations in amounts necessary to satisfy existing requirements. Reactive-type diols, such as A/ A/-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate (Fyrol 6), are preferred, but nonreactive phosphates (Fyrol CEF, Fyrol PCF) are also used. Often, the necessary results are achieved using mineral fillers, such as alumina trihydrate or melamine. Melamine melts away from the flame and forms both a nonflammable gaseous environment and a molten barrier that helps to isolate the combustible polyurethane foam from the flame. Alumina trihydrate releases water of hydration to cool the flame, forming a noncombustible inorganic protective char at the flame front. Flame-resistant upholstery fabric or liners are also used (27). [Pg.348]

Polypropylene can be fabricated by almost any process used for plastics (see Plastics processing). The extmsion of pipe and injection mol ding of fittings present no unusual problem. However, there is no way to bond the fittings to the pipe except by remelting the polymer, which is impractical on most constmction sites. The resin can be reinforced by glass fibers, mineral fillers, or other types of fillers and can be pigmented readily. [Pg.327]

Plastic laminated sheets produced in 1913 led to the formation of the Formica Products Company and the commercial introduction, in 1931, of decorative laminates consisting of a urea—formaldehyde surface on an unrefined (kraft) paper core impregnated with phenoHc resin and compressed and heated between poHshed steel platens (8,10). The decorative surface laminates are usually about 1.6 mm thick and bonded to wood (a natural composite), plywood (another laminate), or particle board (a particulate composite). Since 1937, the surface layer of most decorative laminates has been fabricated with melamine—formaldehyde, which can be prepared with mineral fiUers, thus offering improved heat and moisture resistance and allowing a wide range of decorative effects (10,11). [Pg.3]

Elastomeric Fibers. Elastomeric fibers are polyurethanes combiaed with other nonelastic fibers to produce fabrics with controlled elasticity (see Fibers, elastomeric). Processing chemicals must be carefully selected to protect all fibers present ia the blend. Prior to scouriag, the fabrics are normally steamed to relax uneven tensions placed on the fibers duriag weaving. Scouriag, which is used to remove lubricants and siting, is normally conducted with aqueous solutions of synthetic detergents and tetrasodium pyrophosphate, with aqueous emulsions of perchloroethylene or with mineral spidts and sodium pyrophosphate. [Pg.367]

The plienolic/asbestos laminates (used up to 200°C) have excellent resistance to most mineral and organic acids but are attacked by strong oxidizing agents such as nitric and concentrated sulfuric acids and strong alkalis such as sodium and potassium hydroxide. Fluorinated rubbers, copolymers of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene-fluorides, have excellent resistance to oils, fuels and lubricants at temperatures up to 200°C. They have better resistance to aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons and most mineral acids than other rubbers, but their high cost restricts their engineering applications. Cheremisinoff et al. [54] provide extensive physical and mechanical properties data on engineering plastics. Paper- or foil-backed mineral wool product fabricated from low-density slabs in which the slats stand upright with the fibers predominantly perpendicular to the major faces. This type of product is used on circular and elliptical ducting, pipes and vessels to give a compression-resistant insulant. Supplied in roll form. [Pg.119]

Glass-fiber tissue or non-woven fabrics are used for decorative purposes on many insulants. They also give improved strength to foam plastics and enhanced sound-absorption characteristics to mineral wools. [Pg.119]

Deposition involves the formation and precipitation of both crystalline and amorphous (noncrystalline) scales and the ultimate adherence of these mineral salt scales onto a heat transfer surface. Problems of deposition have the deleterious effect of reducing the rate of heat transfer, thus increasing the heat input requirements and raising the costs of operation. In addition, deposition reduces the efficiency of cooling the fabric of the boiler (especially the heat transfer metals), which leads to long-term problems of fatigue failure. [Pg.144]
