Event Selection

As discussed in the previous section, the first requirement of the event selection is a reconstructed muon with transverse momentum pr 5 GeV and pseudorapidity —2.1 T] 2.1. Only global muons, i.e. muons identified in the tracking detectors as well as in the muon chambers, pass the selection. If more than one muon is present in the event, the muon with the highest transverse momentum is chosen. The transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions of muons passing the event selection are shown in Fig. 4.10 for fe-events. 

The assignment between the reconstructed muon and the TrackJet is based on the result of the TrackJet clustering algorithm. The muon is associated to a TrackJet if the muon track lies within the TrackJet with transverse energy 7- 1 Gev. The 

A total number of 3.7 million events are selected in a data set corresponding to lpb of integrated luminosity. Of those, 49% contain a b quark while 26% are classified as c-events and the remaining 25% as udsg-t tnis. The variation of the b fraction with the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the muon is shown in Fig. 4.12 for simulated events. 

The relative transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the axis of the associated jet is calculated according to the formula 

Hie pf distribution for b-, c- and udsg-svtnts is shown in Fig. 4.13. The b-spectrum contains a contribution from cascade decays b-r-c + X p, + X in addition to the direct semileptonic decays b ii+X. The p p spectrum of -events is significantly harder than the p f spectrum of c- and M /sg-events, while the c- and a 7ig-spectrum turn out to be rather similar.

A decision-tree approach has also been recommended as an aid to rational efficient salt selection. In any event, selection criteria need to be directly linked to the clinical use situation and the appropriate dosage form, as criteria for, e.g., a parenteral product will obviously substantially differ from those for an inhalation aerosol. 

Impulse Noise Analysis Results. ANITA-lite measured about 130,000 distinct events, with an approximate rate of 5 events per minute. Fig. 6 shows examples of the major classes of impulsive noise encountered. The vast majority of triggered events are due to local payload interference such as switching noise from the Support Instrument Package. The duration of this class of events exceeds several hundred nanoseconds and a few events exhibit circular polarization for a portion of the pulse. The bottom two panes show an example of a synthetic pulse injected into the data stream to simulate a true signal event. The pulse is coherent and aligned across all channels. Preliminary studies of event selection procedures were conducted. They yield no passing events, while 97% of simulated Askaryan-induced impulses with amplitude 5<7 above noise survive (Miocinovic et al., 2004). 

The DPE (digital), together with the interfaces to spacecraft, resides within a dedicated box that is isolated from the detector. The tasks to be performed by this multi-functional micro-computer controlled system include event selection and validation, background rejection, and collection and formatting of scientific data. It also provides the interface to the spacecraft, command and control interface, detector control, the collection of housekeeping data, power conversion and conditioning, and an overall experiment watch-dog . 

The data represented here should be viewed as a conservative estimate of the sensitivity of the INTEGRAL Imager. Methods of preferential event selection, with the aim of increasing the polarimetric modulation factor are currently under investigation. It is believed that with these analysis methods the sensitivity can be improved by at least a factor of two. 

COMPTEL s in-flight performance shows that, with the above event selection criteria, for a two week observation the background rate is about 51000 counts in the energy band 0.75-5 MeV, and for a Crab like source the effective detection area and time is Aej/Te/f = 3 x 10 cm. Spatial response between two X-strips and between two Y-strips is shown in Figure 2. The left panel shows a relatively flat response to 60 keV total-energy events over the surface of strip X2, then drops off rapidly to zero at the edge of the strip. Similiary, response of the X3 strip rises as X2 drops. Events that share charge between X2 and X3 are excluded from the individual strip response curves by event selection using a narrow energy window around 60 keV. Therefore, the sum of the individual strip responses (dashed curve) drops between the strips.

This section summarizes the methods used to evaluate and quantify the consequences of operational accidents, natural phenomena events, and external events selected in Section 3.3.2.3.5, Accident Selection as DBAs. Consequences to the public and the environment stem from airborne releases of radioactive material since no liquid or solid radioactive material would be released in the selected accidents. The airborne pathway is of primary interest for releases from nonreactor nuclear facilities according to DOE-STD-1027-92 (DOE 1997). Exposure to direct or scattered radiation is a hazard only for workers due to the distance to the public. 

In this study, qualitative aspects of ATHEANA were applied for the definition of complex accident scenarios involving human actions. The purpose of identifying deviations in accident sequences through a structured process is to verify whether the procedures are still appropriate even under these conditions. The findings, for the human failure event selected from the Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) in the previously performed Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA), were not related to EOPs. Thus, it was found that the major contributors to failure were rather related to the human-system interface and some crew characteristics. 

Each step of the risk analysis contains certain degree of uncertainty, which is caused by the initial event selection, weather conditions specification, amount of released dangerous chemical substance determination etc. The risk analysis is thus complex task and it requires a step by step approach. This contribution is dealing with one step of the risk analysis which is acute toxicity impact assessment.
