Momentum transverse

It is well known that a light beam carries momentum and tliat tire scattering of light by an object produces a force. This property of light was first demonstrated by Frisch [K)] tlirough tire observation of a very small transverse... [Pg.2457]

Axial-Flow Transverse-Momentum Mass Flowmeter. 10-19... [Pg.879]

General Principles There are two main types of mass flowmeters (1) the so-called true mass flowmeter, which responds directly to mass flow rate, and (2) the inferential mass flowmeter, which commonly measures volume flow rate aud flmd density separately. A variety of types of true mass flowmeters have been developed, including the following (a) the Maguus-effect mass flowmeter, (b) the axial-flow, transverse-momentum mass flowmeter, (c) the radial-flow, transverse-momentum mass flowmeter, (d) the gyroscopic transverse-momentum mass flowmeter, aud (e) the thermal mass flowmeter. Type b is the basis for several commercial mass flowmeters, one version of which is briefly described here. [Pg.897]

Axial-Flow Transverse-Momentum Mass Flowmeter This type is also referred to as an augiilar-momeutum mass flowmeter. One embodiment of its principle involves the use of axial flow through a driven impeller aud a turbine in series. The impeller imparts augiilar momentum to the fluid, which in turn causes a torque to be imparted... [Pg.897]

We shall call an amplitude ( ), which satisfies Eq. (9-516), a transversal amplitude.20 We can summarize the above statements as follows in momentum space, a one-photon amplitude u(k) is defined on the forward light cone, i.e., for Jc2 = 0, k0 > 0, and satisfies the subsidiary... [Pg.552]

Evaluation of p and Km2 requires determination of the void fraction and the two-phase pressure drop. Crossflow is determined from the appropriate lateral momentum balance equation. The interchange due to mixing, represented by w is determined by the turbulent transverse fluctuating flow rate per foot of axial length (lb/hr ft), where... [Pg.510]

In Bohr s theory, only estimates of maximum and minimum impact parameters are necessary. Better computations are required for determining the transverse distribution of lost energy or the effect of secondary electrons. The minimum impact parameter according to classical mechanics is ze2/mv2 from angular momentum consideration in quantum mechanics, it is h /mv. In practice, the larger of these two is taken. Also, the impulse approximation used by Bohr for the maximum impact parameter is not an absolute rule energy transfer beyond bmax falls off exponentially (Orear et al., 1956 Mozumder, 1974). [Pg.17]

The second term s may be called the operator for spin angular momentum of the photon. However, the separation of the angular momentum of the photon into an orbital and a spin part has restricted physical meaning. Firstly, the usual definition of spin as the angular momentum of a particle at rest is inapplicable to the photon since its rest mass is zero. More importantly, it will be seen that states with definite values of orbital and spin angular momenta do not satisfy the condition of transversality. [Pg.255]

If j = 0 there is only one vector spherical harmonic which is identical with the longitudinal harmonic Y 1 = nVoo- From this observation it follows that there are no transverse spherical harmonics for j = 0. It also means that the state with angular momentum zero represents a spherically symmetrical state, but a spherically symmetrical vector field can only be longitudinal. Thus, a photon cannot exist in a state of angular momemtum zero. [Pg.258]

Numerical experiments have shown that in many one dimensional systems with total momentum conservation, the heat conduction does not obey the Fourier law and the heat conductivity depends on the system size. For example, in the so-called FPU model, k IP, with (3 = 2/5, and if the transverse motion is introduced, / = 1/3. Moreover, in the billiard gas channels (with conserved total momentum), the value of P differs from model to model(Li and Wang, 2003). The question is whether one can relate / to the dynamical and statistical properties of the system. [Pg.16]

Bulk silicon is a semiconductor with an indirect band structure, as schematically shown in Fig. 7.12 c. The top of the VB is located at the center of the Brillouin zone, while the CB has six minima at the equivalent (100) directions. The only allowed optical transition is a vertical transition of a photon with a subsequent electron-phonon scattering process which is needed to conserve the crystal momentum, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 7.12 c. The relevant phonon modes include transverse optical phonons (TO 56 meV), longitudinal optical phonons (LO 53.5 meV) and transverse acoustic phonons (TA 18.7 meV). At very low temperature a splitting (2.5 meV) of the main free exciton line in TO and LO replicas can be observed [Kol5]. [Pg.138]
