The pressure equipment directive was adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council in May 1997. It harmonises the national laws of the 15 Member States of the European Union relating to equipment subject to the pressure risk. That directive is one of the series of technical harmonisation directives such as for machinery, medical devices, simple pressure vessels, gas appliances and so on, which were foreseen by the Communities programme for the elimination of technical barriers to trade. It therefore aims to ensure the free placing on the market and putting into service of the equipment concerned within the European Union and the European Economic Area. At the same time it permits a flexible regulatory environment, allowing European industry to develop new techniques increasing thereby its international competitiveness. [Pg.937]

Chemical Society (see above) only 43% had a favorable opinion of the chemical industry. It was ranked lowest among a list of 10 industries, and only 1 in 10 respondents felt very well informed about the role of chemicals in improving human health. The situation is not appreciably better elsewhere. In Canada only 40% of adults in a 1999 survey had a favorable view of the chemical industry, and only 18% felt that the industry was excellent or good at being honest. A survey of 9,000 Western European citizens by the European Chemical Industry Council showed that only 45% had a favorable view of the chemical industry. There is still a lot of work to do to change these opinions and perceptions. [Pg.190]

In 2002, the European Exposure Factors (ExpoFacts) database started as a 2-year project funded by CEFIC-LRI (European Chemical Industry Council, Long Range Research Initiative) to create a European database of factors affecting exposure to environmental contaminants. The aim was to create a public access data source, similar to the US-EPA Exposure Factors Handbook (US-EPA 1997), which has been widely used by European researchers, but with European data. Since 2006, the project is hosted by the European Commission s Joint Research Centre (JRC 2007). [Pg.325]

Many resources were used to compile the information in this book. The hazardous chemicals listed here are taken from Sittig, 4th Edition. For a few chemicals in Sittig, their makers are not listed, perhaps because they are made in such limited quantities that they are sold through specialty middlemen and catalog houses. The primary resources for preparing the list of manufacturers in this book were (1) the Web sites of the companies, (2) membership in special sections of United States chemical societies, the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and societies in India, Japan, Asia, Italy and elsewhere, and (3) sites in which companies register themselves as producers of particular products, such as the Thomas Directories in the U.S. and Europe, the American Chemical Society ChemCyclopedia, and the British Chemical Industries Association Chemextra. Direct access to these sites are quickly available to any Internet user. They are listed in Section VII - Hotlines, Databases and Useful Web Sites. [Pg.355]

The International Council of Chemical Associations—made up of the American Chemistry Council, the European Chemical Industry Council, and the Japan Chemical Industry Association—is the global coordinator of the Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI), a research program that funds research in the effects of chemicals on human health and the environment (LRI 2001). [Pg.80]

These two aspects are also reflected in the visions developed on this issue in the United States in the so-called Vision 2020 program (see Appendix 1). One can see that all aspects of introducing step-by-step changes are mentioned. And in the European Union many current activities are based on the topic of process intensification, reflected, for example, in the European-Supported Research Projects (see Appendix 2). On the industrial side, a lot of effort is being given to the topic of process intensification the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) has process intensification as one of its technology focus points in the so-called SUSTECH program (see Appendix 3). [Pg.458]

Compared with other major European countries and the USA, the chemical industry in Germany has the best image. This is verified by the figures of the Pan-European Surveys carried out by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) since 1994 (Fig. 27.9). [Pg.372]

Wilfried Sahm sits on the board of the European Chemical Industry Council and is director-general of the German Chemical Industry Association, where he also sits on the Presidential Council. Wilfried Sahm worked at Hoechst for 20 years, ultimately as head of agrochemical production and deputy head of the company s agrochemical sector. He studied chemistry in Munster, receiving his doctorate in 1969. From 1992 to 1998 he was an expert member of the Enquete-Kommission set up by the German federal parliament to investigate the protection of humanity and the environment. [Pg.505]
