Improving purchasing performance remains one of the most important levers for chemical companies to boost profitability according to the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI), in 2002, chemical companies in Germany spent more than 50 percent of their gross production value at third party suppliers 31 percent went to purchase raw materials, 13 percent was spent on re-sale items, three percent on energy, and another three percent on maintenance services. 

Wilfried Sahm sits on the board of the European Chemical Industry Council and is director-general of the German Chemical Industry Association, where he also sits on the Presidential Council. Wilfried Sahm worked at Hoechst for 20 years, ultimately as head of agrochemical production and deputy head of the company s agrochemical sector. He studied chemistry in Munster, receiving his doctorate in 1969. From 1992 to 1998 he was an expert member of the Enquete-Kommission set up by the German federal parliament to investigate the protection of humanity and the environment. 

As a result of these suspicions, the West German Chemical Industry Association arrived at a consensus to voluntarily stop using decabromodiphenyl ether and octabromodiphenyl ether in new product development. 

Data used data is stated to be presented in the standardized form recommended by the German Chemical Industry association (VDI) and the European Chemistry Council (CEFIC) . Most of the key indicators show historical data for the four years between 1994 and 1997.

One of the most applied high-pressure standards for the piping components is based on the so--called IG-Standard, which was established by an association of the German Chemical Industry beginning with 1930. Similar developments took place in the US and elsewhere. The pipes applied are of seamless design. The joints and seals which have been approved for high-pressure are shown in Fig. 4.2-1. 

This element has been taken on by the ICCA who have produced a draft list of 1200 High Production Volume (HPV) chemicals. The Chemicals Assessment and Management groups of the various industry associations have programmes for gathering information on these chemicals and others already on priority lists. Beyond the Confidence in Chemicals Initiative are a number of related national commitments. These include self-commitment by the German chemical industry under the auspices of VCI to establish a minimum data set for all chemicals (including intermediates). 

Transport Incidents in Europe during 1998 there were 16 distribution incidents (as defined by the Association of the German Chemical Industry - VCI) out of approximately 400 000 shipments. These included three spills of over 200 litres of dangerous goods, and two spills of over 1000 kg of non-hazardous goods.

The technical and economic aims of the production process must nevertheless be fiilfilled. This definition is also used by the Swiss chemical industry [31].
