It is important, however, to remember that there is a great danger in seeing technology alone as the answer to the environmental crisis. In fact, the idea that new technology is the solution to all our problems is central to the faulty way of thinking that created the crisis in the first place.

The effects of polluted waters on the proliferation and edibility of fishes and other forms of ocean life have been researched extensively in recent years, and this knowledge has created a vital incentive for reducing pollution. Just a few years ago lightweight refuse that rises to die ocean s surface and littered beaches created an environmental crisis and another incentive for ceasing ocean dumping of sewage and solid wastes into the oceans.

The chemical industry has responded amazingly fast to the ozone depletion emergency. It is encouraging that we can act rapidly when an environmental crisis occurs. Now we need to get better at keeping the environment at a higher priority as we plan for the future. ... 

This issue must be kept very high on the agenda of the scientific community. The Pontifical Academy of Sciences is to be congratulated on recognizing this before our arrival in Rome. P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, and the Hydroproject Institute (Moscow, Russia), as well as on a wide scientific literature mainly published in Russian editions. These data are complemented by the results of a series of recent Russian national and international projects, where an extensive research of the Aral Sea was carried out over the past decade. Special attention is paid within the book to satellite monitoring of the state and different natural parameters of the Aral Sea and its surroundings. Reasons for the progressing environmental crisis and present socio-economic problems in the Aral Sea region are also highlighted. 

We had a very dramatic example of that in the case of the use of aldicarb on Long Island. Following extensive use of this highly toxic insecticide for the control of the Colorado potato beetle, it was noted that the material readily leached through the coarse sandy soils characteristic of Long Island and finally reached the ground water. Contamination of the only source of drinking water for the area must be classed as a severe environmental crisis.

Abstract As already described, environmentally friendly surface finishing is presently very important and the requirement will be become much more important in the future. This is because we are facing a serious environmental crisis in nature as well as the severe environmental politics in industries. We have to balance them and find a new and better way for the fumre. In this chapter, we describe what environmentally friendly surface finishing is. Also we classify this process type into some cases. Particularly in this chapter, we focus on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and explain its concept. 

Environmental friendliness is becoming more important, since we seem to face a critical environmental crisis at this point, putting aside the authenticity of the situation. As a result, we have to take environmental friendliness into consideration when designing new materials or conventional materials. Since the surface is always the interface between bulk materials and the environment, materials surfaces should always be carefully designed.

Some of the reasons for concern at a potential global environmental crisis were briefly discussed in the article on Environmental sustainability. Here, some of the principle environmental impacts associated with the use of adhesives are outlined. 

This raises some disconcerting issues. Are our endeavours to reduce organic vapour emissions, to eliminate chromates, and so forth (repeated, mutatis mutandis, throughout industry), really sufficient to prevent an environmental crisis Perhaps serious questions of sustainability and of limits to growth now have to be faced seriously. 

Traditionally, inorganic chemistry has been a great contributor to our environmental problems. Historically problems of this type arose long before the current environmental crisis. Most often inorganic pollution results from the presence and concentration of a specific element rather than from the particular molecule in which the element is foimd in nature. Mercury poisoning and itai itai disease lead and its multiple toxic effects, or any of the problems associated with high concentrations of certain transition metals all relate to the specific element. 

The generation of plastics waste has been stimulated by increased production coupled with an increasing population, and it is responsible for the world s present environmental crisis. The rapidly increasing demand and production of plastics has led to increased pollution and the replacement of many non-plastic items in the market place. 

Industrial marketing is highly likely to be affected, in business and domestic activities, by the antipollution lobby. Some industries could be adversely affected by the environmental crisis, whilst others could grasp new marketing opportunities resulting from financial support and new legislation.
