The Black Sea region plays a very important role in the world economic system the condition and development of the economics and active involvement of the region in world economic relationships determine to a great extent the affairs in world politics as a whole. General information about the region s countries is given below in Table 1. [Pg.424]

In this context it is interesting to note that one of the most commonly kinds of maps used in psychological research—the room plan—is not even considered to be a map by the majority of people. We (Downs, Liben Daggs, 1988) showed children and adults a collection of place images and asked Is this a map with response alternatives of Yes, No, or . Whereas a world political map elicited yes responses from 93%, 90%, 99%, and 100% of kindergartners, first-graders, second-graders, and adults, respectively, a room plan was accepted as a map by only 12%, 17%, 30%, and 33% of these same samples. And it was not simply that respondents used the response. Instead, the plan map was actively rejected (i.e., responded to with No ) by 63%, 68%, 49%, and 58% of those samples. [Pg.76]

This issue must be kept very high on the agenda of the scientific community. The Pontifical Academy of Sciences is to be congratulated on recognizing this before our arrival in Rome. It is also vital that the world political system prepare for what may be a huge strategic issue within a few decades. This is a potential environmental crisis that science has, for once, foreseen. If that foresight is confirmed by events, there will still be time for the nations and their international institutions to work for solutions. [Pg.440]

Cinchona species (Rubiaceae) are sources of quinine and quinidine, containing a quinoline nucleus and derived through the extensive elaboration of strictosidine (Fig. 42). The intriguing history of the antimalarial quinine and its role in world politics over the past 350 years are legendary. It is frequently the only antimalarial drug to which patients are not resistant. Its widest use, however, is in the beverage industry in tonic water. Quinidine, an isomer of quinine, is used to treat cardiac arrythmias. [Pg.254]

Elsewhere Hirschman takes social science in general to task in much the same fashion "But after so many failed prophecies, is it not in the interest of social science to embrace complexity, be it at some sacrifice of its claim to predictive power ("Rival Interpretations of Market Society Civilizing, Destructive, or Feeble Journal of Economic Literature 20 [December 1982] 1463-84). [Pg.431]

This two-way effect is labeled mutually constitutive by constructivists. See Emmanuel Adler, Seizing the Middle Ground Constructivism in World Politics, European Journal of International Relations 3(3) (1997), pp. 319-63. However, I would not go so far here as some constructivists who argue that domestic ideology or self-identity drive changing perceptions of national interest. See the articles in Katzenstein, ed., Culture of National Security. [Pg.91]

We came to London full of hopes and expectations, Aage Bohr remembers. It was, of course, a rather novel situation that a scientist should thus try to intervene in world politics, but it was hoped that Churchill, who possessed such imagination and who had often shown such great vision, would be inspired by the new prospects. Niels Bohr cherished that hope. His British friends had not prepared him. [Pg.529]

As the world political situation changed, the requirement for carbon fibers in military applications has decreased, entailing major defense cuts. The emphasis has shifted to commercial applications, which have grown extensively. Therefore, it is not surprising that carbon fibers are involved in a whole gamut of applications. Developments do occur very rapidly in the composites field and some of these applications may now have been discontinued or replaced, but serve to illustrate the diverse applications of carbon fiber. [Pg.951]

This double manoeuvre of self-asserting and self-binding acquires further significance in the context of world politics between the two world wars. As colonised countries began their long and difficult journeys to independence, as dominant nations collided more violently with each other in contests of strength, as travel and communication technologies advanced with... [Pg.244]
