In a global economy, firms do not frequently face situations in which different suppliers look similar, but only vary on few criteria like price and lead time. Especially for strategic commodities, it is hard to find two suppliers that have exactly the same advantages. Kannan and Tan (2002) point out that Soft non-quantifiable selection criteria, such as supplier s strategic commitment to a buyer, have a greater impact on performance than hard quantifiable criteria.
