Environmental friendliness

This method has gained wide acceptance due to its simplicity and environmental friendliness. Research is under way to improve the economy of this method. The most important step is the preparation of ground rubber, since the size and topography of the particles vary with the different techniques of grinding [30]. The characteristics of the ground rubber play a vital role in determining the properties of the ground rubber-filled rubber composites. [Pg.1046]

Many pubhcahons refer to the use of micro reactors for process intensificahon, with all the imphcahons related to this definition - safety, cost reduchon, high productivity rate, environmental friendliness, energy efficiency and so on [5, 25, 104]. A particular feature of interest is the reduction of the equipment size (see also Section 1.4.3.5 for a systematic top-down description of this topic). [Pg.57]

Vaccari (1983,1999) has given a state-of-the-art account of the preparation and catalytic properties of cationic and anionic clays. Some examples of industrial importance have also been reported. Clays exhibit many desirable features, such as low cost, wide range of preparation variables, ease of set-up and wOrk-up, high selectivity, and environmental friendliness. Cationic clays are widespread in nature, whereas anionic clays are rarely found in nature, but they can be synthesized cheaply. Cationic clays are prepared from the minerals but industrial anionic clays are generally synthetic. Smectite clays exhibit both Brpnsted and Lewis acid sites on the edges of the crystals. Hammet s acidity function values are as follows Na -montmorillonite (M), -3 to t- 1.5 NH4VM -3 to 1.5 H M -8.2 to -5.6 acid activated clay less than -8.2. Laporte also has a synthetic version of cationic clays, Laponite. The acid... [Pg.134]

Compared with ketoreductases, the synthetic application of alcohol oxidases has been less explored. However, selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes is superior to the chemical methods in terms of conversion yields, selectivity, and environmental friendliness of reaction conditions. In addition, coupling of alcohol oxidase with other enzymes provides a tremendous opportunity to develop multi-enzyme processes for the production of complex molecules. Therefore, a growing impact of alcohol oxidases on synthetic organic chemistry is expected in the coming years. [Pg.161]

The increasing current interest in processes that are able to generate complex molecular architectures in one pot has stimulated the development of domino-like procedures that create three bonds in one synthetic operation, with considerable advantages in terms of synthetic efficiency and environmental friendliness. This section describes some examples of the application of these concepts to the preparation of quinolizidine compounds. [Pg.53]

PKR with stoichiometric amounts of Co2(CO)s are still often used as the key step in various total syntheses. However, with regard to environmental friendliness, catalytic procedures are desirable. This chapter will deal with recent approaches in the development of the catalytic PKR. [Pg.175]

Table 2-1 illustrates the variety of different conventional and organic systems which are likely to differ with respect to their environmental and resource use effects. In simplified terms, three different degrees of environmental friendliness can be distinguished for each farming system ... [Pg.3]

In the development of effective catalytic oxidation systems, there is a qualitative correlation between the desirability of the net or terminal oxidant, (OX in equation 1 and DO in equation 2) and the complexity of its chemistry and the difficulty of its use. The desirability of an oxidant is inversely proportional to its cost and directly proportional to the selectivity, rate, and stability of the associated oxidation reaction. The weight % of active oxygen, ease of deployment, and environmental friendliness of the oxidant are also key issues. Pertinent data for representative oxidants are summarized in Table I (4). The most desirable oxidant, in principle, but the one with the most complex chemistry, is O2. The radical chain or autoxidation chemistry inherent in 02-based organic oxidations, whether it is mediated by redox active transition metal ions, nonmetal species, metal oxide surfaces, or other species, is fascinatingly complex and represents nearly a field unto itself (7,75). Although initiation, termination, hydroperoxide breakdown, concentration dependent inhibition... [Pg.69]

The Monsanto project is said to have been canceled, despite the effectiveness and designed environmental friendliness of the products, because of the sinister reputations (not wholly deserved) of both asbestos and phosphates in the popular view. A similar problem with public perception of silicone surgical implants was noted in Section 3.5. The tenor of our times is such that much beneficial technology may be lost through litigation (or the mere fear of it) regardless of any favorable scientific evidence that is put forward. [Pg.149]

To address the ideal including environmental impact considerations into process design, Cabezas et al. [5] introduced a potential environmental impact (PEI) balance as an amendment of the Waste Reduction Algorithm [6]. However, this algorithm is simply a tool to be used to aid in evaluating the environmental friendliness of a process [7]. [Pg.14]

Biocatalysts, mainly hydrolytic enzymes and oxidoreductases, have been used for organic reactions due to their excellent enantioselectivities and environmentally friendliness.1 Typical enzymatic reactions used for the organic synthesis are shown in Figure 1. Especially, hydrolytic enzymes for kinetic resolutions of racemates have been utilized widely because of their high stabilities, wide substrate specificities, lack of cofactor requirements and high availabilities. [Pg.231]

Solid oxide fuel cells are regarded as the energy production systems for 21 st century due to their high efficiency, utilization of a variety of the fuel resources, and environmental friendliness. [Pg.148]

The WAR algorithm involves the concept of a potential environmental impact (PEI) balance. The PEI indices provide a relative indication of the environmental friendliness or unfriendliness of a chemical process. These are ... [Pg.167]

Organic chemists have been attracted for a variety of reasons to supercritical media as an environment for performing reactions. These reasons include, especially for C02 and H20, the environmental friendliness of the medium. The fact that supercritical fluids can be removed without a residue is an advantage. Other advantages include the solubility of gases within supercritical mixtures, the high diffusion rates, and the variable and adjustable density, solvent power, and dielectric constant of the medium. Ordinary gases, such as 02 and H2, are miscible with... [Pg.93]

Micro emulsions can be formulated with carbon dioxide in supercritical state instead of a hydrocarbon as nonaqueous solvent. Fluorinated surfactants are commonly used to prepare such microemulsions. Water-in-carbon dioxide microemulsions can be made and the droplet size has been found to be similar to the size of the droplets of water-in-hydrocarbon micro emulsions with similar composition [21]. Such a microemulsion was used for conversion of benzyl chloride to benzyl bromide using KBr as hydrophilic nucleophile. The yield was an order of magnitude higher in the carbon dioxide microemulsion than in a conventional microemulsion at similar conditions, a fact that has been ascribed to low interfacial viscosity [22]. The big advantage with these micro emulsions is the environmental friendliness and the ease of work-up associated with carbon dioxide as solvent. [Pg.59]
