There are several possible ways to achieve compatibility between chemical practices and environmental concerns. Technical and scientific innovations provide excellent prospects for environmental protection. As we move into the twenty-first century, industrial society is becoming a knowledge-based society. It is vital that we use our growing knowledge and capabilities responsibly, and that we nse them in the interest of environmentally appropriate development.

An early assessment by one commentator has concluded that the lack of specific guidance by Congress and the voluntary nature of the guidelines to be proposed are not adequate to build environmentally appropriate schools in an effective manner. The specific design most appropriate for biomass, waste combustion, and energy recovery depends on the kiads, amounts, and characteristics of the feed the ultimate energy form desired, eg, heat, steam, electric the relationship of the system to other units ia the plant, iadependent or iategrated whether recycling or co-combustion is practiced the disposal method for residues and environmental factors. 

AH Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) rules and regulations should be reviewed prior to handling hydrochloric acid and all the regulations must be followed. AH employees handling HCl must be trained to ensure that they are familiar with the appropriate materials safety data sheets and appHcable regulations. 

The primary environmental concern for the coating plant is actually the residual material on the anode stmctures being returned for recoating. Therefore the anode user must enact effective cleaning procedures prior to shipment. For example, anodes in chlorine use must be cleaned of all traces of mercury and asbestos (qv). Anodes used in electrogalvanizing or in copper-foil production must similarly be cleaned to remove all traces of process materials. If cleaning at the user s plant is not done effectively, the anode may well be shipped back to the user for appropriate action before it is considered for recoating. 

Degradable plastic is a plastic designed to undergo a significant change in its chemical stmcture under specific environmental conditions, resulting in a loss of some properties that may vary as measured by standard test methods appropriate to the plastic and the appHcation in a particular period of time that determines its classification. 

International agreement is close as of 1996 on what an acceptable environmentally degradable polymer should do ia the environment succiacdy put, it must not harm the environment. There has been much progress ia the early 1990s on this issue standard protocols are available to determine degradation ia the environment of disposal, and definitions are understood and accepted ia a broad sense, if not ia detail. Fate and effects issues for these new polymers are being addressed, and these will be resolved and appropriate tests developed.
