First drafts

This evening will suffice. Now a contract with donna Alina Orio. Better do a draft first. ... [Pg.60]

As part of a book proposal, I sent the draft first chapter of the book to the publisher. It was written in third person. The publisher s representative, noting that the book would be written to offer advice to a yoimg audience, suggested that I mix second and third person. He argued that this use of two persons would speak more directly and informally to the target audience. I followed his advice, wrote the book (Walesh 2000) in second and third person, and believe that this use of second and third person was successful. You are reading the third edition of this book which uses first, second, and third persons to further personalize it. [Pg.89]

In the combing preparation, several card slivers are drawn and wound up parallel as comber rolls on a sliver lap machine (Fig. 3.10). There are two different principles of combing preparation. The card slivers can either be drafted first and then wound up as combing rolls (sliver doubling principle), or they can be wound up first and then drafted together on a ribbon lap machine (ribbon lap principle). In modern combing preparation, the sliver doubling principle is preferred. [Pg.105]

The draft standard was then developed so that it was possible to classify both types of film in separate groups. The first being a Classical film, the second a Wide Latitude film. The density range of the standard covered from D=2.0 to D=4.0. A radiographer would expect the contrast to be higher at D=4.0 than the contrast at D=2.0. [Pg.422]

The notes on First Aid have been based on the memorandum Safeguards in the Laboratory compiled by the Science Masters. Association and the Association of Women Science Teachers. This report has, however, been considerably modified and amplified for our purpose, and we are greatly indebted to Dr. F. B. Parsons, M.D., for very kindly supervising our final draft and thus ensuring its medical accuracy. [Pg.593]

In drafting a patent appHcation, proceeding methodically through the several steps necessary to produce the type of disclosure legally and technically sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the laws of the United States is absolutely essential to a successful granting of the patent. A first step is to outHne those elements of the invention which are absolutely essential to its practice. A body of disclosure should be outlined for each of the essential elements of the claim. This disclosure should describe each element in terms of its function, as weU as the parameters that are relevant to the essential nature of the individual element. For example, if a chemical mixture has a component which acts so as to thicken the mixture, it is appropriate to outHne the family of constituents that can serve this function. At the same time, a full outHne of the disclosure of this individual element will include mention of those chemicals that are preferred for use within the mixture so as to perform the desired thickening function. [Pg.34]

To be successful, a team selected from different groups within the project team should participate in the preparation and review of these plans. In addition, a schedule of the review and approval process for these plans needs to be established, accepted by all reviewers, and distributed before release of the first draft. Reviewers should meet an established schedule for review and submission of comments. A distinction between review and approval authority should be determined. The review process determines if all of the required elements are identified. This review can take considerable time, depending on the complexity of the project. The approval process is important when all comments are incorporated. The key responsible persons associated with the project should accept and approve the changes to the document. [Pg.38]

There is no guidance in ISO 9000 1994 on the subject matter of corporate quality policies. However, in the Committee Drafts (CD) of ISO 9000 2000 there is now some useful information. It is recommended that the quality policy should be consistent with the overall policy and goals of the organization and should provide a framework for the setting of quality objectives and quality targets. For the first time in these standards, a link has been made between policy and objectives so that policies are not merely motherhood statements but intentions for action. By deriving objectives from the policy you initiate a process for bringing about compliance with policy. [Pg.93]

I would like to thank Dr. Geraint O. Thomas (Centre for Explosion Studies, Department of Physics, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK) for offering to write Chapter 4. He prepared the first draft, but due to a sabbatical in Japan and other research commitments, he was unable to write the revisions. However, he did make constructive comments and suggestions on the revisions that I wrote. In addition, I would like to thank the following other individuals who provided me with technical data and other assistance based on their knowledge of flame arresters and combustion science and technology G. Binks (IMI Amal), R. Butler (Enardo). K. Chatrathi... [Pg.216]

Following are two versions of a PSM team s mission statement. The first Is a draft prepared in advance of such a team s first meeting the second reflects group consensus and is designed for dissemination to company employees. [Pg.54]

The first draft of this book was written during the tenure of a Killam Resident Fellowship at the University of Calgary in the fall term, 2003. The author is grateful for the financial support that provided release from other duties in order to focus on this project. [Pg.325]

A Military Specification (MIL-F-45961), the first of its kind, for prealloyed steel powder forgings was then drafted and has been accepted as a standard by Department of Defense and commercial organizations. The significance of this work is that the improved PM manufacturing technology is applicable to all weapon systems which require complex-shaped steel forgings... [Pg.840]

The first step is consensus building, where the EWG keep working at the task until they reach a scientific consensus and produce a draft document. Drafting of the document is left to a single rapporteur , who adjusts the document based on the comments and feedback from the parties. [Pg.39]

The first example is the 4-m class William Herschel telescope, at la Pakna, whose optical specifications, drafted by D. Brown, were expressed in terms of allowable wavefront error as a function of spatial frequencies matching those of atmospheric turbulence. [Pg.34]

The time to assemble the implementation team would ideally be prior to researching and designing the implementation proposal. This is has two main advantages first, a proposal that comes from a group is often more believable and secondly, you can share the preparation work if you are working as a team rather than on your own. If the team was not formed prior to drafting the implementation proposal, this should be your first task after it has been passed. [Pg.215]

The first draft is usually based on an existing national, regional, or international review. When no appropriate source document is available, a CICAD may be produced de novo. Authors of the first draft are usually, but not necessarily, from the institution that developed the original review. A standard outline has been developed to encourage consistency in form. The... [Pg.1]

The first draft of the new requirement had draconian security requirements, softened (as is common) after a comment period Demands for biometric identifiers were replaced with password control options. But the revised final regulation was still broad in scope and necessitated extensive documentation and testing for all systems used in the industry (with even stronger controls if the user opted for electronic signatures). [Pg.634]

I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Julius Stieglitz, R. D. Carmichael, J. B. Shaw, Jacob Kunz, A. P. Carman, A. A, Noyes and R. C. Tohnan, who have read the first draft of this paper and of whom several have made helpful suggestions. [Pg.4]

The discovery of two new elements started a frenetic race to find more. Actinium was soon unearthed (Debierne 1900) and many other substances were isolated from U and Th which also seemed to be new elements. One of these was discovered somewhat fortuitously. Several workers had noticed that the radioactivity of Th salts seemed to vary randomly with time and they noticed that the variation correlated with drafts in the lab, appearing to reflect a radioactive emanation which could be blown away from the surface of the Th. This Th-emanation was not attracted by charge and appeared to be a gas, °Rn, as it turns out, although Rutherford at first speculated that it was Th vapor. Rutherford swept some of the Th-emanation into a jar and repeatedly measured its ability to ionize air in order to assess its radioactivity. He was therefore the first to report an exponential decrease in radioactivity with time, and his 1900 paper on the subject introduced the familiar equation dN/dt = - iN, as well as the concept of half-lives (Rutherford 1900a). His measured half-life for the Th emanation of 60 seconds was remarkably close to our present assessment of 55.6 seconds for °Rn. [Pg.663]
