Screening of cells for pectinase activity was done on MP-5 medium [5] after precipitation of polygalacturonic acid with 1% Cetrimide (Sigma). Liquid culture experiments were done under the self-induced anaerobic conditions [6]. 

Some heavy metal-tolerant bacterial strains and their sorption capacities for Cu and Cd are listed in Table 1. These bacteria show great potential for remediating soils that are contaminated with toxic metals. Our pot culture experiments showed that the growth of tobacco plants in a Cd-polluted Yellow Brown Soil (Alfisol) was significantly promoted by inoculating the soil with P. Putida in comparison with the non-inoculated soil (Fig. 2).

The uptake and elimination half-lives of 176 and 169 min and 27 and 29 min were similar to each other and to half-lives obtained using mussels maintained in the laboratory. Half-lives in the longer term laboratory culture experiments (Table IV) were similar to each other. Similarly, the mantle cavity and body water constants gave no indication of stress (Table II). Mussels used in these experiments were selected by size (ca. 6 g viscera fresh weight) and variability could be reduced by adoption of more objective criteria. Instant Ocean culture does not directly effect antipyrine disposition and laboratory conditions are suitable for maintenance of animals for at least short times.

In addition to these variables, the interpretation of 0-values in carbonate shells is complicated by the sea water carbonate chemistry. In culture experiments with living foraminifera Spero et al. (1997) demonstrated that higher pH-values or increasing COj" concentrations result in isotopically lighter shells, which is due to changing sea water chemistry. As shown by Zeebe (1999) an increase of sea water pH by 0.2-0.3 units causes a decrease in of about 0.2-0.3%c in the shell. This effect has to be considered for instance when samples from the last glacial maximum are analyzed.

However, axenlc cultures were grown in ESNW only, and only those extracts which supported the best growth in bacterlzed cultures were used in the axenic culture experiments.

The timed pregnant rats are used to sample gestation day (GD) 9 embryos on the day of the whole embryo culture (WEC) assay. The rats are typically shipped -GD4-5 and allowed to acclimate in the animal room for 4-5 days prior to initiating the culture experiment. 

Trudell and our group, with the generous support of Dr. Hugo Jaurequi, conducted certain cell-culturing experiments on human hepatic cells. Since the effort was self-funded, the scope of the experiments was limited. Nevertheless, we felt we confirmed the viability of a specially designed polyurethane formulation as a substrate for cell growth. 

There are several hundred types of microcapsules being used as a food additive in the U.S. today. Most of these are used in the development and production of artifical flavors or natural flavors and spices. Microcapsules as food additives may be added to enhance or alter appearance. Food is not only consumed for its calories or nutrients. It is also part of our cultural experience and it must be appealing in all of its aspects. It is not just a biological necessity, its consumption is a social activity, an esthetic experience and an expression of cultural and personal experiences. This means that food must not only taste good but it also must have the right color, texture and aroma.
