A further critical appointment that needs to be made in any area where there is a language difference is that of interpreter. An interpreter is very different from a translator and a clear distinction must be made. A translator is a person who merely states words from one language to another the interpreter not only conveys words but also adds context and meaning to the words that can be crucial in a culturally sensitive environment. Once an organism has grown on culture, sensitivity testing can be performed to determine which antibiotics are the most effective.The most commonly used method, the Kirby-Bauer diffusion disc system, usually takes 48 hours to perform. Unfortunately, it can be inaccurate because of the lower concentrations of antibiotic on the test discs compared with levels that can be achieved in the cornea through topical application. In addition, some topical ocular preparations are not available on discs for sensitivity testing.

On a more practical level, pharmacists also should strive to provide patient educational materials that are written at a low literacy level. The National Work Group on Literacy and Health recommends that materials should be at the fifth-grade level or lower, yet most patient education materials are written at the eleventh-grade level. Patient education materials should be short, simple, and contain culturally sensitive graphics. Easy-to-read written materials should be combined with verbal instructions, which ideally should be repeated on several different occasions to reinforce patient understanding. Involving family members in the patient education process also can promote adherence. 

An extensive literature documents persistent differences in health outcomes between ethnic minorities and white Americans. These disparities include differences in health care access and utilization as well as health status and outcomes. Many methods are available for removing oil from shorelines. All of them are costly and take a long time to carry out. The selection of the appropriate cleanup technique is based on the type of substrate, the depth of oil in the sediments, the amount and type of oil and its present form/condition, the ability of the shoreline to support traffic, the environmental, human, and cultural sensitivity of the shoreline, and the prevailing ocean and weather conditions. ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS A number of antibiotics have been formulated for topical ocular use (Table 63-2). Appropriate selection of antibiotic and route of administration is dependent on the patient s symptoms, the clinical examination, and the culture/sensitivity results. Specially formulated antibiotics also may be extemporaneously prepared by pharmacists for serious eye infections such as comeal infiltrates or ulcers and endophthalmitis. 

When LJSI was pursued throughout China, for the most part it was a matter of people switching to iodized salt when it became the only salt available in the market. In areas such as Tibet, however, the situation is quite different. Relatively low economic development, compounded by readily available raw salt through the century-old, traditional barter system, has made the push for iodized salt much more challenging. Health education using locally-developed relevant materials and communication channels, such as culturally sensitive posters, radio broadcasts and television advertising, to create demand for iodized salt was one of the important interventions of the project (Li et al., 2005).
