Fifth-grade

By the time I was in the fifth grade my mom was educated and my doctor helped her to realize I couldn t go to school in that building. She pulled me out of school and got a tutor to work with me at home. That was a pretty hard time for me. I didn t want to be pulled out of school nobody does at that age. School is your only connection to a social life. So, I wasn t happy about it but I knew it was the right decision. The school wasn t a safe place for me, or for anyone, for that matter. When I stopped going to that school I started the process of getting healthy. 

Sometimes I felt pretty hopeless, like when I was supposed to go back to school at the end of fifth grade. I got sick and couldn t go back that day. That happened twice. I thought, God, is this my life Am I always going to be this sick I thought I would always have to be homeschooled.

According a report published by the American Medical Association Ad Hoc Committee on Health Literacy, more than 40 percent of patients with chronic illnesses are functionally illiterate, and almost a quarter of all adult Americans read at or below a fifth grade level. Unfortunately, medical information leaflets typically are written at or above a tenth grade reading level. It is estimated that low health literacy skills have increased our annual health care expenditures by 73 billion. Further contributing to the dilemma is the fact that an estimated three-quarters of patients throw out the medication leaflet stapled to the prescription bag without reading it, and only one-half of all patients take their medications as directed (AMA, 1999). 

If the scene at the annual meeting could have taken place at almost any other pharmaceutical company, the scene in the fifth-grade classroom was Merck s alone. 

It must have been in the fourth or fifth grade that my parents gave me my first chemistry set. I never turned back. Friends had them too and we played with them and read about chemistry together. Several of us made copper-plated jacks and sold them to classmates. 

On a more practical level, pharmacists also should strive to provide patient educational materials that are written at a low literacy level. The National Work Group on Literacy and Health recommends that materials should be at the fifth-grade level or lower, yet most patient education materials are written at the eleventh-grade level. Patient education materials should be short, simple, and contain culturally sensitive graphics. Easy-to-read written materials should be combined with verbal instructions, which ideally should be repeated on several different occasions to reinforce patient understanding. Involving family members in the patient education process also can promote adherence.

An idea I discovered in a local elementary school has merit, i.e. to set up "science centers" in the classroom.
