Educating the Patient and Family The nurse evaluates the patient s ability to understand the therapeutic drug regimen, ability to care for himself or herself in the home environment, and ability to comply with the prescribed drug therapy. If any type of assistance is needed, the nurse provides a referral to the discharge planning coordinator or social worker. [Pg.272]

After discharge, all infants were followed by a team composed of a pediatrician with subspecialty training in Child Development, a public health nurse, and a social worker. In order to maintain contact with the foster families and relatives who had responsibility for the care of the infant, team members made regular home visits and had frequent telephone contact with the infants caretakers. During the first 3 months of placement, infants were seen (an average of twice per month) for follow-up visits at home or in the UCLA Child Development Clinic. Phone conferences with caretakers were held on a biweekly basis. During the foil owing 3 months, clinic and home visits were tapered to once per month and phone contacts were made biweekly. [Pg.258]

Lifestyle modifications should be started early and continued throughout treatment because they may improve ADL, gait, balance, and mental health. The most common interventions include maintaining good nutrition, physical condition, and social interactions. Patients should avoid medications that block central dopamine, as they may worsen PD.1,18 A multidisciplinary approach using the expertise of nutritionists, speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers may optimize care but may not be covered by insurance. Patients should maintain regular visits with their optometrist or ophthalmologist and their dentist. The dentist should be informed that the patient has PD, as PD medications that decrease saliva flow may increase the risk of dental caries. [Pg.477]

Effective and complete treatment of HIV infection involves a multidisciplinary approach, which includes pharmacists, clinicians, social workers, and others. A cancer patient may encounter many different health care professionals phlebotomists, pathologists, surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, counselors, dieticians, social workers, and chaplains all may be involved with a single patient. Each one plays an important role in care of the cancer patient. The pharmacist s role may include education of patients and family members, education of staff about new agents and safety issues, preparation of therapies, resolution of reimbursement issues, development of order sets, and participation in clinical trials. Each patient should have access to an interdisciplinary team to assist him or her during treatment. [Pg.1277]

The fate of Kelly remains in question. Her hospitalization since 1989 for homicidal/ suicidal behavior is a tale of abuse by state authorities, regardless of whether you believe the rest of their story. Kelly has been denied an attorney to represent her and the social worker assigned operates on a "need to know" basis, according to Cathy. [Pg.16]

In 1991 I became coordinator of the support group I am now a PR chair and editor of its newsletter. I ve done national radio talk shows. I write letters. That s the way I cope. There s hardly a day when I don t do something for people with environmental illness and MCS. I really function as a servant, serving people. I never wanted to be a social worker, but I find I m often functioning as one, albeit untrained. EI/MCS is an illness often ignored or attacked as fraudulent. Many of its victims fall into society s cracks, without adequate recognition or support. [Pg.32]

Those fifteen years were very hard. I didn t have anyone I could really talk to and have them understand. I went for counseling during that time, to a psychiatrist for a short while and later to a social worker. They were lovely people but they had no appreciation of environmental illness. Whenever something happened that puzzled me, they would always come up with what seemed like a plausible reason. Now when I look back I know how foolish they were. For example, I remember coming away from one session feeling really good. It was a nice spring day and I drove home with the car... [Pg.109]

Mental and physical health professionals may consider referring clients and patients to a music therapist for a number of reasons. It seems a particularly good choice for the social worker who is coordinating a client s case. Music therapists use music to establish a relationship with the patient and to improve the patient s health, using highly structured musical interactions. Patients and therapists may sing, play instruments, dance, compose, or simply listen to music. [Pg.108]

Because each patient is different and has different goals, the music therapist must be able to understand the patient s situation and choose the music and activities that will do the most toward helping the patient achieve his or her goals. The referring social worker can help this process by clearly communicating each client s history. [Pg.61]

These disorders should concern all physicians and mental health professionals for several reasons. First, mood disorders are very common and will be encountered on a daily basis in most clinical settings (see Table 3.1). Second, they disrupt life in numerous ways. During an episode of depression or mania, sleep patterns change, appetite and eating are affected, family life is disrupted, work efficiency suffers, substance abuse rates soar, and physical illness is exacerbated. Thus, comprehensive treatment of mood disorders routinely requires the work of nutritionists, social workers, family therapists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, substance abuse counselors and 12 step groups, primary care physicians, and others. [Pg.38]

Why buy a book about psychopharmacology if you don t prescribe medications Ask yourself, how many of your clients tell you about the medications they are taking or wonder if they should be taking, for whatever disorder they are receiving treatment for from you. Or, do they tell you that they appreciate having more time with you than they get with the person who prescribes their medications so they can ask their questions in a less hurried environment This is the feedback from many mental health professionals, psychologists, social workers, therapists, and nurses, that we have received. [Pg.403]

A 22-year-old woman engaging in a political protest goes on a hunger strike on a prominent corner in a city park. Although food is offered to her several times each day by social workers and the police, she refuses all offers except for water through the first 2 weeks. [Pg.67]

The approach taken by practitioners in dealing with parental drug problems as they impact on child welfare and child protection forms Chapter 9. The nine focus groups convened were each made up of three or four practitioners (n=35). The focus groups were split evenly between health visitors, drug workers and social workers (three groups of each discipline). [Pg.23]
