Ethnic group

Several studies conducted in experimental animals have demonstrated that diets deficient in protein exacerbate the oral toxicity of endosulfan (Boyd 1972 Boyd et al. 1970 Das and Garg 1981). These results suggest that people who consume low-protein diets, such as chronic alcoholics, dieters, food faddists, various cults, some ethnic groups, the elderly, and some people living in depressed areas or underdeveloped countries, may be more susceptible to the toxic effects of endosulfan. 

Well tolerated in darker racial/ethnic groups... 

Grimes et al. [8] reported substantial efficacy and minimal side effects in 25 patients treated with 20 and 30% salicylic acid peels in darker racial-ethnic groups. Conditions treated included acne vulgaris, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

There are few contraindications to combination salicylic acid/TCA peeling. The combination regimen is tolerated in all skin types and all ra-cial/ethnic groups. General contraindications include salicylate hypersensitivity unrealistic patient expectations active inflammation/der-... 

There is minimal published data on the use of combination peeling protocols in deeply pigmented skin (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-Vl). The author has reported the efficacy of combination peeling with salicylic acid 20 and 30% in combination with 10% TCA for recalcitrant melasma patients. This peeling regimen was well tolerated with minimal side effects in darker racial ethnic groups (see Salicylic acid/TCA peel section). 

Clinicians should be acutely aware that deeper peels carry substantial risks of inducing scarring and hypopigmentation in darker-skinned racial-ethnic groups (Fig. 13.6).

However, blacks and other minority women have proportionally more cases of disease diagnosed at more advanced stages compared with white women. This is thought to reflect access to and use of screening mammography and timely treatment. 

In view of the different manifestations of psychopathological behaviors found in diverse groups that cannot be adequately accounted for by factors concerning race, ethnic group or the acculturation process, Agbayani-Siewert et al. (1999) put forward a model that allows direct examination of the impact of cultural factors on psychopathological manifestations, while continuing to include structural social factors. 

Thus, analyzing the individualism/collectivism construct as a cultural factor can help to explain why some ethnic groups apparently under-use mental health services and, in contrast, rely on members of the family to provide care in possible...
