Vinyl propionate copolymers

Of the higher vinyl ester homopolymers only poly(vinyl propionate) is currently believed to be of commercial value, being marketed as Propiofan (BASF) for surface coating application where greater alkali resistance is possible than with the normal vinyl acetate based copolymers. [Pg.397]

Emulsion paints are based on aqueous synthetic resin dispersions, which afford a lacquer-like paint film. The resin dispersions which are commonly used by the paint industry contain water as the carrier phase. A large number of such dispersions are available, based on different resins such as poly(vinyl acetate), which may be employed as a copolymer with vinyl chloride, maleic dibutyl ester, ethylene, acrylic acid esters, polyacrylic resin, and copolymers of the latter with various monomers, as well as styrene-butadiene or poly(vinyl propionate). These disper-... [Pg.159]

Examination of the NMR spectrum of vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate copolymers with Eu(hfc)3 or Pr(hfc)3 indicated that linkages within the polymer were racemic in nature. The H (400 MHz) and (100 MHz) NMR spectra of 3-amino-l,2-dicarba-c/oio-dodecaboranes exhibited enantiomeric discrimination in the presence of Eu(hfc)3. The resonances broadened in the presence of the shift reagent, but it was still possible to observe signal separation for the two enantiomers. [Pg.807]

Vinyls, finyl esters are usually used in waterborne coatings in the form of copolymer dispersions. Typical vinyl esters are vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl laurate, and vinyl versatate. Acrylic, maleic, and fumaric acid esters are used as copolymers, finyl acetate is lower in cost compared to (meth) acrylic esters. Although vinyl acetate coatings are inferior to acrylics in both photochemical stability and resistance to hydrolysis, this does not prevent them from being used for exterior... [Pg.225]

Inoki et al. reacted poly(vinyl propionate), PVPr, with lithium diisopropy-lamide (LDA) in order to create anionic sites along the polymer chain, since LDA can replace a hydrogen atom from a methylene or methine group adjacent to a carbonyl group. Subsequent addition of MMA leads to the formation of a graft copolymer PVPr-g-PMMA [81] (Scheme 28). [Pg.30]

Quite recently. Union Carbide Corp. introduced Vinate monomers. These are vinyl pivalate, vinyl neodecanoate, vinyl neononanoate, vinyl propionate, and vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate. These monomers are said to improve the hydrolytic stability and water resistance of emulsion copolymers [3]. [Pg.204]

Poly(vinyl ester) dispersions are quantitatively more important than solid resins. Homopolymer and copolymer dispersions are used for binders in emulsion (dispersion) paints, plastic-bonded plasters, and water-thinnable adhesives. Poly(vinyl acetate) dispersions are less important than vinyl acetate copolymer dispersions. The most important comonomers of vinyl acetate are vinyl laurate, dibutyl maleate, Versatic Acid esters (VeoVa, Shell), ethylene, vinyl chloride, and butyl acrylate. Poly(vinyl propionate) and copolymers of vinyl propionate with butyl acrylate, styrene, or vinyl chloride are also marketed and used as dispersions. [Pg.32]

Poly(vinyl acetate) dispersions form lightfast, dry, hard, brittle films. Plasticizers therefore have to be used (external plasticization), which are, however, volatile and lead to embrittlement of the films after a relatively short time. Internally plasticized dispersions of copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl laurate, butyl maleate, Versatic Acid esters, or ethylene form permanently flexible, nonaging films that are not, however, always sufficiently resistant to hydrolysis. Terpolymer (vinyl acetate-ethylene-vinyl chloride) dispersions form films that are more resistant to hydrolysis than homopolymer and copolymer dispersions. The films also have a higher mechanical strength and lower flammability. The glass transition temperature of the terpolymer can be varied within wide limits and properties can be matched to requirements by using a suitable choice of comonomers. The same is true of vinyl propionate copolymer dispersions. [Pg.33]

Vinyl propionate copolymers (e.g., with acrylate esters) are used in the same way as vinyl acetate copolymers. [Pg.126]

Photodegradation of poly(acrylic acid [449, 1952] occurs by mechanisms similar to those described for poly(methacrylic acid) (cf section 3.4.2). There are several papers devoted to the photodegradation of polycarboxylic acid esters such as poly(vinyl acetate) [335-337, 519, 749, 750, 1482, 2147, 2173] (cf section 3.4.4), poly(vinyl propionate [335-337], poly(vinyl butyrate) [1480], and copolymers such as poly(acrylic acid-co-phenyl isopropenyl ketone) [1465], poly(vinyl acetate-co-ethylene [335-337,2003], poly(vinyl acetate-coethylene) blends with poly(vinyl chloride [2005] and poly(vinyl acetate-cophenyl vinyl ketone [1208, 1209]. [Pg.127]
