Butyl maleate

Several ester monomers have also been studied. In methanol solution, methyl acrylate (16,21), ethyl acrylate (21,54), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (55), allyl acrylate (44), glycidyl acrylate (56,57) usually in methanol solution, have been extensively studied. Methyl methacrylate (19, 21, 28, 30, 36, 39, 58) in diversified media composition, has been successfully grafted on polyamides. Vinyl acetate is reported also for grafting on polyamide backbone (19, 28, 35, 58), as well as n-butyl maleate in methanol solution (55). Diallyl maleate as cross-linking agent for polyamide chains is reported (44). Other less usual ester monomers have been mentioned in the literature to form grafts (41,59,60). 

On the other hand, chemicals might be chosen as agents for generation of active centers in the polymeric backbone and grafting of monomer in the vapor phase. Ammonium persulfate and styrene (189), acrylic acid (190), butyl acrylate (191), potassium persulfate and n-butyl maleate or 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (55,134) and ammonium ceric nitrate and methacrylic add (192) are examples of this method. Benzoyl peroxide deposited on polycaprolactam fibers initiates the grafting of styrene in vapor phase (193). 

A consequence of the addition of coordinated OH- to alkenes is that other nucleophilies, for example a coordinated aminate ion, should also be active. This type of reaction is seen with the chloropentaammine complex [Co(NH3)500CCH=CHC02Bu,]2+ in aqueous base533 (Scheme 49). The reaction of the f-butyl maleate complex occurs to the extent of ca. 50% and is complicated by hydrolysis of the maleate ester and some decomposition of the cobalt(III) complexes. Reactions of this type have recently been exploited in the synthesis of j3-carboxyaspartic acid in the coordination sphere of cobalt(III).53...

Poly(vinyl acetate) dispersions form lightfast, dry, hard, brittle films. Plasticizers therefore have to be used (external plasticization), which are, however, volatile and lead to embrittlement of the films after a relatively short time. Internally plasticized dispersions of copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl laurate, butyl maleate, Versatic Acid esters, or ethylene form permanently flexible, nonaging films that are not, however, always sufficiently resistant to hydrolysis. Terpolymer (vinyl acetate-ethylene-vinyl chloride) dispersions form films that are more resistant to hydrolysis than homopolymer and copolymer dispersions. The films also have a higher mechanical strength and lower flammability. The glass transition temperature of the terpolymer can be varied within wide limits and properties can be matched to requirements by using a suitable choice of comonomers. The same is true of vinyl propionate copolymer dispersions.
