VA/crotonates/vinyl neodecanoate copolymer is the most used polymer in aerosol hair sprays (ca 1993). Like its precursor above, it has free carboxyhc acid groups which can be neutralized to give various film properties. Recommended neutralizing agents include aminomethyl propanol, ammonium hydroxide, and dimethyl stearamine. Recommended percent neutralization is 90%, but products can be found in the 80—110% range. [Pg.454]

Vinyl neodecanoate [26544-09-2] is prepared by the reaction of neodecanoic acid and acetjiene in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc neodecanoate. Physical properties of the commercially available material, VeoVa 10 from Shell, are given in Table 4. The material is a mobile Hquid with a typical mild ester odor used in a number of areas, primarily in coatings, but also in constmction, adhesives, cosmetics, and a number of misceUaneous areas. Copolymerization of vinyl neodecanoate with vinyl acetate gives coating materials with exceUent performance on alkaline substrates and in exterior weathering conditions. [Pg.106]

The only producer of vinyl neodecanoate is Shell in The Netherlands, who markets the material as VeoVa 10. Production is several tens of thousands of metric tons per year. The vinyl ester is shipped in bulk or in lined dmms, stabilized with 5 ppm of the monomethyl ether of hydroquinone... [Pg.107]

The two main polymers used in hairspray are vinyl acetate/crotonates/vinyl neodecanoate copolymer (a form of vinyl acetate) and octylacrylamide/acrylates/butylaminoethyl... [Pg.234]

Table 1 shows an example of the partial operating instructions and log for the preparation of a terpolymer of vinyl acetate, butyl acrylate, and vinyl neodecanoate. The details of these instructions will, of course, have to be individualized for specific situations. [Pg.3]

Copolymers. Vinyl acetate copolymenzes easily with a few monomers, e g, ethylene, vinyl chloride, and vinyl neodecanoate, which have reactivity ratios close to its own. Block copolymers of vinyl acetate with methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and vinyl pyrrolidinone have been prepared by copolymerization in viscous conditions, with solvents that are poor solvents for the vinyl acetate macroradical,... [Pg.1678]

VINYL NEODECANO ATE (51000-52-3) CijHjjOj Combustible, polymerizable liquid (flash point >175°F/>79°C). Inhibitor (monomethyl ether of hydroquinone or copper is recommended) must be present in adequate concentrations to avoid explosive polymerization. Inconq)atible with acids, 2-aminoethanol, ammonia, aliphatic amines, alkanolamines, ethylene diamine, ethyleneimine, ozone. The monomer is usually supplied in bulk or resin-lined drums and may be stored in tin- or stainless steel-lined dmms. Storage in plastic or other vessels is not recommended. Other, more structurally complex resins, which are highly functional and in use today, are the copolymers of three monomers (vinyl acetate, crotonic acid, and vinyl neodecanoate) and a polymer formed from octylacrylamide, t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, and two or more monomers consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or their simple esters (Table 7-5). This polymer provides a low-molecular-weight version acceptable in low-VOC systems however, it is very expensive when used at 30% higher concentration for optimal holding power. [Pg.364]

Quite recently. Union Carbide Corp. introduced Vinate monomers. These are vinyl pivalate, vinyl neodecanoate, vinyl neononanoate, vinyl propionate, and vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate. These monomers are said to improve the hydrolytic stability and water resistance of emulsion copolymers [3]. [Pg.204]

To a 1-liter resin kettle equipped with a reflux condenser, an explosion-proof stirrer, a thermometer and temperature controller, and a nitrogen inlet is charged 204.00 gm of deionized water. Then 6.00 gm of Cellosize hydroxyethyl cellulose WP-300, 3.00 gm of Tergitol NP-40, 3.90 gm of Tergitol NP-15 (two nonionic surfactants), 3.3 gm of Siponate DS-4 (an anionic sufactant), and 0.6 gm of ammonium bicarbonate are added and the stirred mixture is blanketed with nitrogen and wanned to 55°C. This temperature is maintained for 20 min. A mixture of 18.00 gm of vinyl acetate, 4.50 gm of butyl acrylate, and 7.5 gm of vinyl neodecanoate is added, followed by 0.24 gm of ammonium persulfate. The reaction mixture is heated to 75°C and maintained at that temperature for 15 min to form the seed latex. [Pg.266]

The reaction temperature is then raised to 78°C and the gradual addition of monomers and initiator solution is begun. The monomer solution, consisting of 162 gm of vinyl acetate, 41.4 gm of butyl acrylate, and 66.6 gm of vinyl neodecanoate, is added over a 2-hr period. The initiator solution of 0.60 gm of... [Pg.266]
