Each handbook contains an abstract, a foreword, an overview, learning objectives, and text material, and is divided into modules so that content and order may be modified by individual DOE contractors to suit their specific training needs. The overall project itself requires formally structured planning and control in addition to the validation plans for the computerized operation. To provide this, a project and quality plan from the pharmaceutical manufacturer (or its nominated main contractor) is normally developed as a separate and complimentary document and needs to overview all activities, resources, standards, and procedures required for the project. The plan should define project-execution procedures, quality management procedures, engineering standards, project program, and project organization (with authorities and reporting responsibilities), and reference the project validation plan. There are instances in which the project and quality plan and the project validation plan can be combined into one document. 

Four appendixes are included. Appendix A contains standard materials selection used by many refiners and contractors in petroleum processing equipment. Appendix B contains a rules of thumb overview of refinery materials of construction. Appendix C contains background information on hydrogen diffusion through vessel walls, and Appendix D contains a standard specification for steel line pipe. 

In his contribution entitled Shaping in ceramic technology - an overview , Andrea Bresciani, who is with the world s largest ceramic plant equipment contractor SACMI, describes and compares the three most important ceramic shaping methods. 

Annual training is required for all headquarters SUBSAFE workers, from the apprentice craftsman to the admirals. A periodic refresher is also held at each of the contractor s facilities. At the meetings, a video about the loss of Thresher is shown and an overview of the SUBSAFE program and their responsibilities is provided as well as recent lessons learned and deficiency trends encountered over the previous years. Contractors or business persons look up a subpart in this appendix, get a brief overview of what it is about, and answer quick and easy questions. They can first go to this manual and decide which sections of the code to interpret. If they answer yes to a question in a subpart, then they know that they need to look that subpart up in 29 CFR 1910 and make sure that their company complies with that standard.

All the above investigations should be the subject of written reports. The ensemble of these documents can then be analysed to give an overview as to the aptitude of the contractor to be able to respond to the needs of the project. A preliminary assessment can be made at the time of drawing up the list of bidders and a deeper investigation made as part of the bid evaluation of say the two or three most likely candidates.

Performance elements and standards that incorporate the increased emphasis on health and safety are being developed for both SRSPO and SRRO. A review of several Performance Appraisal Plans (PAPs), DOE F 3430.7, indicated that many contained a performance element that stated that the individual will carry out environment, safety, and health (ES H) functions as assigned, overview contractor performance regarding ES H activities, and demonstrate a clear sense of safety consciousness while carrying out assigned responsibilities. SRRO personnel have a similarly worded performance element in their PAPs.
